Early Morning La Jolla Coast Photo Shoot

  • Jan 13, 2013 · 8:00 AM
  • La Jolla Childrens Pool

January to early March is the peak time for shooting Pelicans. Let us meet in La Jolla at 8:00a.m. at the La Jolla Childrens Pool and then walk between Coast Blvd. Park in the south and La Jolla Caves in the north. We should have many photo-ops on that route. Parking will not be a problem as it is easy to park that early and there are no parking restrictions on Sundays. Attached is a gallery of Pelican shots, most of which I took in February and March of 2010 that will give you an idea what we will be shooting, but there will also probably be surfers, fishing boats, seals, sea lions, other marine birds and if we're lucky Dolphins to shoot.

Afterwards around 11a.m. we can walk to Bubba's Smokehouse BBQ at 888 Prospect Street for an early lunch. I've already talked to the manager, so there's no problem accommodating us. Here's their site:

Your telephoto zooms will be best for this shoot. I shoot the Pelicans in-flight hand held, but you may want to use a monopod. For those that are interested, I will talk briefly about what camera settings are best for shooting Pelicans in-flight.

If you RSVP YES, please show up, otherwise change your RSVP to NO in a timely manner, so that other members have the chance to attend.

Any questions, comments or suggestions, please contact Walter via email.

I'm looking forward to seeing you all and another great day out!

What lens will be good for this shoot[masked] ? or more zoom ?

I only have a 270mm on my 7D. Will that be utterly useless? I could always photograph other things I suppose!

Vidya: the[masked] on the 7D body will be fine.

Greetings: For those interested, I will provide some tips on how to photograph Pelicans and other Bird in mid-air before the shoot. Familiarize yourself with your focus settings of your camera. --- You should be shooting in active mode. That's "C" Continuous Servo for Nikon. --- Metering should be sent to Matrix. --- It's best to shoot in Aperture Priority setting the Lens to 4.5 - 5.6, for most long zooms that's all the way open. --- ISO should be high enough so you get a fast shutter speed of at least 1/800sec, i.e. 200 or 400 based on lighting ---
Pick your target from far away and follow it with focus lock. --- Several organizers will be available to answer any questions you may have tomorrow morning.

I wish I had known about this shoot. I didn't get the notification. I am off every Sunday and it would have been perfect for me. Maybe next time. I hope everyone enjoys the shoot.

As there is a long waiting list for this one, we will be repeating this shoot in as few weeks.
