Paddle to Toronto Islands on large group canoes

Hey Voyageurs

I wanted to post this event for our new members an say welcome to our group, an for those that may sign up over this winter period.

Just so you can all get an idea of that great people we have in our group and the fun time they have had in the summer of 2013.

If you get the chance please take the time to see the previous events we adventure on, ranging to afternoon trips and exploring the islands, full moon canoe trips with a camp fire over looking the city with toasted marshmallows.

We also one a month have a trip to through the islands and stop at the Marina bar over looking the city from the islands and then we take the ferry back to the city for free, this event is great for meeting new people and relaxing over food an drinks, and often with a live band also.

For all the great people we meet last year we look forward to seeing you again in the new season, so keep us in mind an remember the winter is not forever and we will soon be back on the water in the sun having a great time.

When you head down you can bring bags for water bottles and cameras, they are perfectly safe but also we have lockers if you prefer.

The views from the canoe and the island are breath taking so please share your photos and experience with us on meet up group.

We have cold running water that you can fill up your bottles with, and if anybody forgets then you can also buy drinks where we are located.

Before we set off, you will all be given a life jacket (PDF) and a paddle to match your size, everyone will be given an instruction on how to paddle, so beginners are welcome.

On this tour we will all travel across together to the Islands, it normally takes around 45 minutes to get there at a very relaxed pace, on the way we would take you around the bird sanctuary, which is great for photo opportunities with lots of different wild life to see such as turtles and minks, it does depend on the day but its always different.

Once on the island we would stop at Center Island for around 45 minutes to an hour, so if you choose to bring a lunch you could find one of the many picnic benches and get some shade, or the other option would be to take a stroll around and find lots of different eateries.

After everyone is together again we will get back on the canoes and head towards the lagoons under the bridges and then back with and amazing view all the way to the Harbourfront where we began.

Look forward to seeing you guys!

If it is raining tomorrow afternoon, any chance you could move it to Sunday? Weatherman says rain tomorrow then clearing and 18 on Sunday.

    May 16, 2014

    • Chris P.

No need to panic Christine, ive been keeping a close eye all week on the weather and it looks like it will turn out fine, there is no call for thunder storms so we are safe to go and we have a 3 hour window with 7 hours of sun predicted. Sunday the canoes are already booked up. So no need to worry we are still going ahead!

    Hi Chris,
I was wondering if I can take the subway and bus to this location. Any suggestions on the route?
    Thanks :)

    May 14, 2014

    • Christine

Maryam, there is a bus (509 Harbourfront) that you can take from Bay & Front St. that goes to Rees St. stop (closest one to Robertson Cres.), then just walk down.

    May 15, 2014

  • Stacy

Hey Chris! How do we pay for this? Also is the location relatively easy to find? Looking forward to being back on the water and meeting everyone!

    May 14, 2014

    • Sam

Not Chris but thought I would help out since I've been several times. Payment is in cash when you arrive. The location is very easy to find. We generally all meet at picnic tables at the location. You will see the paddles and lifejackets laid out on the ground. Looks like a big group so I'm guessing you can't miss it! Hope this helps :)

To all first timers paddling, I'm sure you will find this a most trilling experience. Being out on the open water. Can't think of a better way to spend an evening, than being surrounded by friendly people, in the open air, building cardio as you go and seeing our beautiful city line from a different perspective. Beware it can be addictive:-)

This will be my 1st meetup with this group. Just wanted to say I am so looking forward to this. I love canoeing (although I haven't done it in years) and being on the water. Thank-you for organizing this! :)

    April 12, 2014

    • Chris P.

Hi Kelley, im sure your have a great time, i think everyone is looking forward to being back on the water after such a long winter, look forward to seeing you.

  • sigana29

Hello, would be very interesting, except I have absolutely no experience with a paddle outside, my kitchen utensils that remotely look like a paddle. Does this preclude me from trying, oh it gets better, not a good swimmer. But very willing to try

    April 8, 2014

    • Chris P.

Hi Cidalia, Your comment made me chuckle,Ok with the swimming part no need to worry, i have been running these trips for several years an never has anybody gone close to the water unless they want to get their feet wet over the side,we have many upto date Life Jackets of all sizes of (PFDs) as they are called now. Before every trip my and my guides are there to help with your Jacket and the correct size paddle for everyone, then once in the canoe before we take off each canoe will have their own guide to show you all how to paddle together, it will also be the guides duty to stern the canoe from the back so he will turn the canoe the whole time avoiding any traffic on the water, so you can paddle along at your own pace and enjoy the view, weather and fun. Hope thats a help if i can help with anything else before the season starts then just ask. So no utensils needed :D Chris

      good news

      April 8, 2014

  • Julie

Chris, I would imagine that we will need to start gearing up for this ( and other events ). Can you suggest some exercises or how we can start to get in shape after the long winter. For those of us that do little or moderate exercise. Thanks

    April 8, 2014

    • Chris P.

As the season goes on i would like to try a couple of race events with landmarks on the islands we have to reach then take a break, but thats way into the summer so everyone can get the chance to experience it first and see what we are all about. So back to you question i would say you would only really need to maybe do some arm exercises if you have had any trouble with it in the past, if at any stage you feel light headed or sore then when we return you can come an keep me company at the back :D also nobody can see if you are paddling there to as they are looking forward...little tip there keep that to yourself
