I was driving across the Miller's River in Athol last weekend and noticed that a lot of the ice was gone and the water was moving swiftly.  As a contrast, there are still people ice fishing on my local pond!  Most of the New England canoe and kayak fatalities last spring occurred on rivers where spring rains and snow melt caused swift moving water, unlike what people may have been used to. Unless you are an experienced whitewater kayaker, please wait until the ponds and lakes thaw and the water temperature warms up before you put yourself at risk.

For some info on cold water immersion:

Once Whitehall warms up (it has to thaw first!), I'll post some trips there.  It is a shallow lake and it seems to warm up faster than some deeper ones.

Some kayak-related things to do while you wait for things to thaw:

Kittery Trading Post holds a Paddlesports Show at UNH in Durham, NH April 1-3:

The North and South Rivers Watershed Association has an "event" on April 2 in Norwell, MA with gear, demos and lectures about kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding,  boat building, flyfishing, etc.
