Green River Camping Trip - Munfordville to Green River Ferry

This will be a 2 day paddle from Munfordville, KY to the Green River Ferry in Mammoth Cave National Park (April 20 and 21).

The meet-up location is the Green River Ferry parking lot, where we will consolidate boats and people, and meet at the Big Buffalo Crossing at 0930 CDT. We should be at the GR Ferry by 8:45 to get this done.

At the put-in there is plenty of parking and restrooms. This will be a 29 mile paddle that will take an estimated 10 hours on the water. The estimated time is "paddling time" and does not include breaks or camping.

This a long paddle, the water will be cool, the weather mild, and you will be loaded with camping gear. Hoping for mild weather! HOWEVER, this is NOT a paddle for those who do not regularly do long (15+ mile) paddles.

It would be nice to make some consolidated/coordinated dinner plans so we aren't all duplicating each other. I'm open for suggetions.

Day 1: Munfordville to (about) Dennisons Ferry.
Day 2: Dennisons Ferry (about) to Green River Ferry.

Rentals are available at this facility: http://www.bigbuffalo...

If you are not sure what to pack, here is our on-going list from the message board:

How do y'all like the Gasper and is it easy to camp on this time if year? Any suggestions on put in-take outs? I'm interested in the rough water. Thank you.

Hey guys, just found your group and we are traveling from Murray this weekend to paddle from Munfordville to Green Ferry. We are all new to the river, so a couple of quick questions for someone that is more familiar with it! How was the current this weekend? I checked out the USGS site and curious what current conditions are like? We are all new to the river and want to make sure everything is safe! Also, is there river access somewhere between Munfordville and Lucky Island. The full 29 miles is going to push us on time, so we were looking to hop on the river somewhere in between! Thanks to anyone that responds and I may meet up with you guys sometime!

No takeouts once you leave Munfordville until you get to the park. You may want to try a shorter trip like Green River Ferry to Brownsville. Its still in the park and nice

    • Maryellen S.

Yes, and the Green River Ferry to Houchens Ferry is approx. 12 miles, if you have time constraints. You can camp at MCNP and it's right by GFR.

I had a great time on the trip and seeing a much different river than I experienced two years ago July. Thanks to everyone that fed us, I ate better at camp than I do at home. There were quite the entertaining conversations, I must say y'all made quite a first impression ;). It was nice to meet everyone - I am not going to promise that I will be able to call you all by name the next time I see you. I am still fuzzy on 4 or 5 name but out of 16 that's not too bad - what can I say I'm a C student. :)

Thanks to all of you who did so much to make this a great paddle. It was fun and a good reunion for those I know and good to meet all those I didn't. See you on the water again soon, I hope.

Great trip! Thanks to all that turned out, cooked, brought food, provided entertainment (including the zombie who shall remain nameless), and paddled their weekend away! :) We'll do it again in the fall.

Fast current and perfect weather to enjoy two beautiful Spring days in full PLUMAGE with so many fine-feathered paddling friends! We camped on Lucky Island and were lucky enough to have some high ground! Fabulous food~thanks to Uncle Don's great chili, Bubba Duck Powell's homemade salsa, Bubba Duck Duane's homemade strawberry ice cream churned on site, Bob's custom-made omelets, bacon, fried potatoes, and all camper contributions! Got to know new folks and catch up with others...fun times! Couldn't ask for a better time!

great meetup as always with this group. For those that didn't make it you missed out on some great chili, good fast paddle & great camp site breakfast. :D

Will be bringing some garlic bread to toast over the fire at dinner and also some bacon for breakfast. :) I'll leave my car at the take and will be able to take a couple of boats on my trailer back to the put in on the way home Sunday. I'll get my backcountry permit on Friday.

    1 · April 13, 2013

    • Joe M.

      @jason.....makin bacon?

      April 19, 2013

    • Jason S.

Powell was correct the only thing better than bacon is EVEN MORE BACON. I think I learned that from reading the Hobit.

Depending on release levels we will be moving somewhere between fast and very fast. Kick back, paddle enough to steer, have a cigar, take pictures, enjoy the day! :)

I am so jealous. Y'all are going to have a great time & I hope to catch the groups next excursion. If the water levels aren't too high I'm supposed to camp/kayak the duck river. Everyone be safe.

Does anybody need to meet in BG? If so, let me know. If not, I'm headed straight to the take out, too.

    April 18, 2013

    • Tamara W.

Per Powell, if you can get a permit, park at the take out, if not, park at the put in.

      April 18, 2013

    • Powell A.

Bill and Chuck - let's just meet at the takeout. I can't carry any more boats as I already have two large boats and camping gear to carry. If you are going to drive to the put in from there, you don't need a parking permit, and we already have the whole group registered for backcountry camping. I know Bill said he would help take boats to the put in, and I'll get them back on Sunday as we have three shuttlers.

      April 19, 2013

  • William P.

Somebody let me know if we are still going to meet at kmart or just meet at the take out?

    April 19, 2013

    • Powell A.

Bill and Chuck - let's just meet at the takeout. I can't carry any more boats as I already have two large boats and camping gear to carry. If you are going to drive to the put in from there, you don't need a parking permit, and we already have the whole group registered for backcountry camping. • Kevin N.

I will be bringing Marker's Mark coffee for Sunday morning, I do not however have a way of percolate the coffee. Just wanted to see if anyone was bringing a percolator?

    April 17, 2013

    • Kevin N.

My bad, I am bringing Maker's Mark in the bottle too, it that will cover the 10 lashes!!!

      April 18, 2013

    • Powell A.

we'll therefore let it slide this time

      April 18, 2013

  • Powell A.

    Suggestions:

Uncle Don is bringing chili for dinner, and Bob is bringing breakfast. If you plan to participate with one or both of those, please chip in a few bucks to them, and bring some extras, listed below.

I will bring some paper plates. Need more. NO plastic plates!

I will bring salsa (some hot for me, some mild for normal paddlers) and chips for pre-dinner snacks.

We can use appetizers, buns (Don is also bringing hotdogs), chips, hot sauce, sour cream, shredded cheese, more paper plates, orange juice, spoons, forks, etc... Please list these on this discussion.

Uncle Don and Bob - Tamara and I are canoeing, and since I won't have to carry food, I should have some extra room if needed.

    April 4, 2013

    • Maryellen S.

Since Michelle is no longer coming, I will add her items to my list...no problem.

      April 18, 2013

    • Powell A.

if we eat all the above by the end of breakfast, some boats will certainly be lighter! no, wait, on second thought, we will just have shifted the weight in our boats!

      2 · April 18, 2013

  • Powell A.

If you will let me know no later than Sunday evening if you NEED to park your car at the take out - Green river Ferry - we will take care of your permit. We need the make, model, color, and tag number of your vehicle.

If you are camping there before the trip, you should do this yourself.

I also need to know who is meeting in Bowling Green, who is at meeting at the take out, and who is meeting at he put in.

    thanks,

    powell

Sorry, but I couldn't access that list of what to pack. I have never camped out of my kayak and need some help as to what to bring. Thanks so much.

    April 2, 2013

    • Joe M.

Damn, is it not safe to kayak anymore? Thats "blitzkrieg" was some effective stuff back in the Nazi hay day.

      April 17, 2013

    • Natalie

If there are Nazis on the river, someone should bring along Brad Pitt. For safety.... :)

Sorry forgot it was thunder weekend. Next time

      April 16, 2013

  • Maryellen S.

P.S. I'll do my best to get all my stuff (not a minimalist) in Bubba Duck Powell's 16 ft SOT but may beg for some space for either my sleeping bag (will condense as much as possible) as it's supposed to be in high 30's Sat. PM or my air mattress.

    April 16, 2013

  • Powell A.

NOTE: Those meeting in BG will leave at 0800 CDT, go to the Green River Ferry take out, consolidate with those there, and should be at the Big Buffalo put in by 0930 CDT.

I am wondering about what to expect from the first day of the trip. I am hoping that it is not a paddle-like-crazy-to-get-the-miles-in kind of day. I like to float and to only use the paddle to maneuver every so often. Outfitters have Munfordville to Dennison Ferry as a 12 hour trip. Buffalo Crossing told me that it could be done in 8-10 hours on the water. I have never been on that secion of river but that seems like that it is going to take about all the daylight we have to cover that distance, unless we do a lot of paddling. So how much paddling are we going to be doing, is there going to time to stop and look around?

    April 3, 2013

    • Joe L.

Thanks Maryellen and Powell. 6 hours, that is a big difference from what Buffalo Crossing has. I have been on other trips where the outfitters give about twice the time due to people stopping and swimming about 1/2 the time - but I am not planning on swimming this time of year. I appreciate the information.

      April 4, 2013

    • Powell A.

Well, ...... 3 of us did paddle 22 miles in just under 6 hours, stops included in that ime, yesterday! But really good water flow did help! What fun! big QUACK!
