Nolin River - Paddle through Mammoth Cave National Park

  • Jul 27, 2013 · 9:00 AM
  • Minit-Mart

This section of Nolin River is known for its beauty as well as the opportunity to spot Bald Eagles! It would be a treat to spot our national bird.

We'll put-in just below the dam at Nolin Lake at the boat ramp. This is a beautiful section of Nolin River through Mammoth Cave National Park. The trip will be about 9 miles, which is why we are meeting an hour earlier than usual. We'll take out at Houchins Ferry on the Green River. This will require us to paddle UP the Green River for about 2 miles to get to the take-out. The trip should take an estimated 5.5 hours, not including time to stop for lunch.

Pack a picnic lunch and be sure to bring an approved PFD.

This is a class I paddle, suitable for beginners and first time paddlers, but it will be a long day.

....and thanks to all those that helped out the new ones, in so many different ways, including me! I enjoy the company of these people! Always fun.

It was fun and what a beautiful area. Lived so near it all my life, until now, had never been on that river. Hard work, long paddle, but my arms didn't fall off. They are still attached. I'd do it again with some adjustments. ha ha ha

Thanks Joe and Matt, it was a great trip. Also thanks to strongwoman Tangie Duck for pulling me out at the takeout and for Duane's help in showing me how to exit a perfectly good kayak. Jerry tried to dunk me but failed....HA. A great group of folds to be around.

GREAT PADDLE! Patsy and I enjoyed meeting the newer members and again seeing the ones from other paddles. Hope to meet everyone on upcoming meetups. Great fun with the water cannons. Duane, I think I stiil owe you a few more WATER BLASTS. WARNING ! Patsy is not, anymore, an UNARMED NEWBIE. She now owns her own WATER CANNON. And vows revenge . ENJOYED. Thanks to all for a great day.

Please do not forget your PFd for this paddle. A friend at work who lives in the area has told me that rangers have been issuing citations to anyone not having one in the boat. You do not have to wear one but need it in or on the boat. Thanks !

If anyone needs a loaner kayak for tomorrow's trip, the two Gander Mountain kayaks just became available again. Two of our guests are not going to be able to join us tomorrow. Of course, you will need to call or go by Gander and reserve those. Jason is over there now and took our names off the book.

Just a reminder folks. We are meeting at 9:00 in the AM. I know some are a custom to the usual 10:00, but we are meeting at 9! Bring your boat, PFD, paddle, food, beverages, sunscreen, hat, bug spray, beef jerky, and you should be set! See you in Brownsville!

    July 26, 2013

  • Powell A.

I like the pic for this paddle. I was chin deep in the cold water to get that pic!

    July 26, 2013

  • Joe M.

I think a zombie would win in a fight between it and bigfoot. One bite and bigfoot no longer will want Jack Links Teriyaki beef jerky. He will make the switch to brains or fish......

    July 25, 2013

    • Jason S.

I don't think we should talk about Zombie Bigfoot!!! That bring terror to a whole new level!!!!! He's big, He's fast, He's good at hiding, and He like to eat brains!!!! I have goose bumps just writing about it!

      1 · July 26, 2013

    • Powell A.

Jason, It would be a Bigfoot Zombie. :)

I am really looking forward to this trip - I have wanted to try this stretch of water for quite a while although I'm not so sure reading all this about zombies and big foot! (I wear size 13 shoes - does that qualify me as a "big foot"?) Is there is anyone with a truck and room for me and a kayak leaving north BG around 8??? Happy to pay for gas.

Wow I want to try this. Need suggestions on kayak to purchase and gear needed. I've paddled around on Nolin a time or two but borrowed the kayak. I do have a life vest. Any suggestions appreciated.

    July 5, 2013

    • matt w.

As with most things in life, bigger is better ! 12 foot sot or open cockpit rec boat is a good choice.

      2 · July 18, 2013

    • Tom N.

I believe Jason had suggested checking with Hook1 in Hendersonville, TN, and I would second that suggestion. They can provide excellent advice, AND let you try out any kayaks you might be interested in. They will trailer them to a nearby (less than 5 minutes) lake, and let you paddle to your heart's content.

A lot of people are going on this upcoming trip. We are asking everyone to carpool, if possible. If you have a trailer to carry boats, that would be very helpful.
    Thanks everyone!

    July 5, 2013

    • Maria C. S.

Beth, you mention above that you are stopping in BG to collect a boat. I know last time you used the Gander Mountain loaner kayak. If that's your plan, you'll need to find another option on this trip. Both of the Gander Mountain loaner kayaks are already reserved by others going on this trip.

      July 24, 2013

    • Beth S.

No Maria, I am borrowing the kayak etc from a friend.

Just drove over the Green in Brownsville, water looks good at this point. Drove over the dam at Nolin as well and it does not look bad either. Have not checked the gauge but it did not look like they were pulling alot of water from the lake. Stay posted......

That's good news. Green river was really moving last week when we did it.

      July 24, 2013

I checked out Green River Ferry this morning. The river is 4ft. which looked pretty "normal" to me.

NEWS FLASH : according to the B.F.F.R.O (Bigfoot field research orginazation) a large hominid commonly referred to as Bigfoot or Sasquatch was sighted last week at the conjunction of the Nolin and Green rivers. Just an FYI for anyone attending this paddle. For the safety of all attending, I must request that you do not carry any raw fish or berries in your boat. All food must be contained in bear proof canisters . Anyone using the restroom "off-trail" must travel in groups of three or more. These safety rules were given to me from the cryptozoology dept. W.K.U. Thanks !

OK ,some of you guys are not taking the Bigfoot thing seriously. I am posting this for YOUR safety. Just to verify. Please go to kybigfoot.com,go to reports, scroll down to and click on Edmonson county. Read the report and continue to scroll down to the Ancient Reports. You will see Native American Pictographs located on the exact section we will be paddling. I am only trying to help and keep everyone safe. This is prime foraging time for the creatures and I don't want any accidents or maulings due to myfriends and fellow kayakers not being informed. I live only to serve.

I just want to let everyone know that the "Beast Mode" paddle was quite possibly the most epic paddle all year. Again, huge thanks to all that participated. Another will come, but its up to this host to decide when it will be initiated! :)
