The Great River Rumble 2013!

Great River Rumble! ‘13

We’ll paddle on two rivers the St. Croix River and the Mississippi River!

from Grantsburg, WI on the St. Croix River to Red Wing, MN on the Mississippi River

Please join us as we travel about 111 total miles, down the St. Croix River and the Mississippi River!

Our trip down these two rivers will start on the St. Croix River near Grantsburg, Wisconsin. We will paddle our way through some of the most scenic and least developed country in the Upper Midwest. This trip involves an assisted portage near Taylors Falls. We will then continue down the St. Croix to our final destination on the Mississippi River at Red Wing, Minnesota.

I have one question for Mike. Did the chiropractor cure your back problems or are you going to have surgery. Dennis said he was going to check out the ER's in Indianapolis after your last supper at Outback :)

    Had a great time!!!

Michael...you were the second youngest person this year. As an experienced GRR you did us all proud! Thanks for all the comedy relief (sorry Mike) and all that you contributed to our group on this trip. Hope you are able to make the trip next year too! I agree with Mac, you will go far in whatever it is you do.

You were one of the best parts of the Rumble for me! Will treasure the fun memories and comments that will forever define this year's rumble - "wrong tent - but come on in anyway"!!!! You're the finest young man I know and you will succeed in whatever you do-you've got what it takes and you have the best dad anyone could have!

Really great and beautiful trip! Hated leaving MN. Think I'm going to audition for Survivor and list all six of you as teammates.
Got to experience adversities and turn them into challenges. Mac, Mike and Mike, it was great paddling and getting to be part of your circle. Dennis, Katherine, Maryellen, Mac, and Mike & Mike, thank you for a fun time and lots of laughs!

great trip but time to do some serious paddling and work off the weight I gained. Met some really great and good paddlers, looking forward to next year.

Going to add some pics now. Just wanna say that Mac and Jessie made the most of this trip by taking advantage of the expert instructors who teach for a living but offer it free on this trip. Both of them left their comfort level to take their skills to the next level. This trip was hard from the viewpoint of moving boats and equipment long distances on top of the paddling. Great experience!

Gave a whole new meaning to the word "Rumble." Fantastic trip. Very organized and fun! Friends for life with you 6! You're the best! Thanks for adopting me.

Hmm.....crazy hat is finally finished. I used Locktight glue and actually glued my thumb and pointer finger to the hat! WOW! That glue really holds!

    July 23, 2013

    • Maryellen S.

Gonna be awful hard to paddle with your fingers stuck to your hat...glad it wasn't the other finger...not a good way to make friends on the Rumble! LOL :) Can't wait to see everyone else's crazy hats!!!!

      1 · July 23, 2013

    • Powell A.

no, no, no... you're supposed to glue your fingers to the paddle

      1 · July 26, 2013

  • Katherine F

Dennis looked at my finished hat and told me to put it back in the bedroom. That told me it was appropriately crazy :)

    2 · July 23, 2013

  • Katherine F

Dennis was checking all my stuff and asked if I had put parmanon on my hat, evening shoes and socks. Of course I had not thought of those items. He said to make sure I did the hat extra well. With that done, the Thermacells and bug mesh netting clothing I think we are prepared to have a great mosquito free week!

    July 22, 2013

    • Maryellen S.

I am not prepared with any mosquito netting clothing and too late now...but I do have the spray and thermacell; am hoping it will be enough!!!! Will just have to deal with the little pests as best I can! If I wear camo, maybe they won't be able to see me!

REI has Bear repellent. Just picked up a 50 round box of repellent and a good cookbook.

Is crazy hat day on Thursday?

    July 14, 2013

  • Katherine F

I was thinking about hat day...I am going to look for something to reasonably buy or make that is wearable and outrageous x5. Maybe something we could put on top of our regular paddle hats.

    1 · June 29, 2013

    • Maryellen S.

Going to repair mine and actually try to remember to unpack it Wednesday evening to wear on hat day (Thursday). :)

      July 1, 2013

    • Katherine F

Actually made a hat. Thinking that after we shuttle Taylor's Falls I will move it to the boat for safe keeping and easy access.

So today Dennis comes home with a new cooler on wheels, an awesome folding chair and a new duffle bag from BP. Who would have thunk it??? This is going to be such a fun trip. Not any 30 mile days...several short goof off days. I am going to bring my hiking sticks.

      It is packed.

Last year I thought most of the breakfasts were pricey and not that good. I think it will be very cost effective to bring bars and canned fruit, Starbucks in cooler.
In addition to names on things I am using colored duck tape to mark our paddles, straps, etc. Last year the straps were a mess to sort out and I think this will help in recovery after the shuttles.

Found a way to utilize my down time after my chipmunk enhancement on Friday (4 wisdom teeth being extracted): I bought all my decor for my hat today, so it's gonna be CRAZY!!

Made reservations for before and after at the Red Wing Hotel.

Is the name Of the hotel Red Wing Hotel? Or St. James? Or American Inn and Suites?

      June 10, 2013

    • Maryellen S.

Jessie and I have reservations confirmed for the St. James in Red Wing! Whoo Hoo!

Dennis put in his vacation request for the GRR. Said he should know the answer on Thursday. The operator who covers him will have to work 12 12 hr days in a row if he gets to go.

    June 11, 2013

    • Maryellen S.

So does his "cover operator" get a say or is it all management's decision? Hoping he gets to go...that would be a great trip for you to do together. :)

When we were paddling the Current River in Missouri I happened upon a couple from St. Croix. They said summer weather is great - hot in the day and cool at night. Only issue is MOSQUITOES! From dusk to dawn they are out and are as big as hornets! (lol) I have been looking at mosquito proof clothing vs lots of bug spray. Dennis gave me a can of Repel mosquito stop for clothing and gear that he got at Bass Pro. This stuff has no odor, not greasy, and it stays on your clothes for 2 weeks. I am going to use it on all my evening clothes just prior to packing.

    2 · June 8, 2013

  • Katherine F

The GRR is fast approaching! Jessie and Maryellen are you driving half way and spending the night somewhere? I am guessing that Mike will make the drive in one day??? I was looking today to see if there was a great place to stop and maybe do a bit of sightseeing.

    June 9, 2013

    • Jessie *DAS BOAT 2* G.

As far as sight seeing, the Wisconsin Dells is a great area, but then that doesn't leave too much farther to drive to Redwing. The Dells is a phenomenal water area.

Just talked to Jessie and we are going to try and make it up in one shot on Thursday, so we can rest/do something on Friday in Red Wing. :)

I'm considering this trip and wondering what the travel plan is. Are you going to carpool as a group? Load all boats onto one vehicle?

    June 6, 2013

    • Maryellen S.

We are buddying up as we can and then traveling separately, as not everyone can get the same amount of days off from work and leave at the same time.

What's the weather like in this region?

    May 4, 2013

    • Jessie *DAS BOAT 2* G.

No, really, it should be really nice during the day and cool down at night. BUT who knows, I talked to my uncle and they got snow on May 2nd!

      May 4, 2013

    • Maryellen S.

I'm thinking the weather all over the nation unusual this year...last year, we had Spring/Summer 2-3 weeks early and this year, it's been 2-3 or more weeks later than normal. Who knows, but Jessie would be the one to know about the weather! :)
