Drakes Creek - West Fork

Start the New Year off right! Come out and join us on the 1st paddle of 2009. This trip is on Drakes Creek from Woody Atkinson Ford (located on Barnes School Rd.- which runs along I-65 where Hwy. 240 crosses the interstate) and the take-out is the Highway 622 overpass. This section has a rock formation we can climb for lunch and to enjoy the view. There is also a side creek at the same location that would be nice to explore. John B. says on previous trips they have met at the white store at Hwy 31W (Nashville Rd.) and Hwy. 240 intersection to complete this trip, so we will make it our meet-up location. From this location we will travel to the put in to drop the gear. This is a class I paddle. Only experienced paddlers, please. Be sure to bring a change of clothes and dress for warmth.

Thanks from a Nashville guy who is always looking to make new paddling friends.

Water current was great and trip distance was about right.I'm ready to try it again after spring rains.

Sorry, but I decided to cancel because it was really raining here this morning. I wasn't sure if the paddle was still on. I am glad to it was and that you all had a good time. I hope to float that river in the future.

Great float! The rains this week had Drake's flowing fast. Definitely an experience paddler only float during winter but would be a great place for beginners to learn about paddling in current once the water is warmer.

Water was up and flowing fast. The rock outcrops were very pretty and the put-in and take-outs were easy.

Jenny, I wouldn't want to poison anybody and the campfire would melt my canoe. The trip is about 5 miles. It will take about 2.5 hours depending on the number of breaks and whether we climb the rock formation and explore the side creek. Oh yeah, don't forget the apple pie! Dress warmly and we will have a good time.

The put-in is easy. The take-out has a short, steep climb up a rock boat ramp. We can assist with getting the canoes and gear to the cars.

The river is in good condition. The Class I portions are mild, just bumpy water with a few rocks thrown in. I paddled this section today (1/3/09) and the water level was great and we saw herons, kingfishers, owls and squirrels.

Come on out and enjoy a cool day on the river!

On AccuWeather.com they are predicting a high of 39 with partly cloudy weather. I'll bring hot coffee!

Thanks for the update Kerri. I am sorry to hear that Al had surgery, and I hope he is going to recover fully. For the next trip, Jan 10th, I am going to post another leg of Drakes Creek that John has recommended. So that would not be a long drive for you guys. Now, it will be extra-special when you get to kayak again with the group.

Hey Mary, Sorry we haven't seen you in a long time. We do keep up with the meetups. Al had shoulder surgery in Nov. and has been unable to do anything with his right arm. Before that, the Saturdays during the fall were all booked with business stuff and other appointments. We look forward to getting back with the group soon. Please keep us posted. We are having kayak withdrawl! Al & Kerri Barman
