Subject: [pagan-1137] To be Tru
Though most members do not identify themselves by the moniker of Asatru, the following ideals should be taken up by all good and honorable pagans as a basis for their pursuit to finding their appropriate path. All too often, the point to all true paths is what is revealed below; a point that gets missed in all the tomfoolery of modern pulp new age materials.
To be Asatru is more than just being followers of the Nordic/Germanic gods and goddesses. It is more than having respect for one's ancestors. To be Asatru means to hold to our hearts beliefs like the Nine Noble Virtues and the ideas and philosophies within the context of the Havamal contained within the Poetic Edda. The Nine Noble Virtues are as follows;
These, my kinsmen and kinswomen, are concepts that we really should not need to STRIVE for. As Asatruar, these concepts are already within us, and STRIVE to be recognized! The real challenge is not in pursuing these ideals, per se, but in allowing ourselves to follows these ideals that our hearts and souls already yearn toward. No one is perfect, be they of Asgard, Vanaheim, or Midgard, and we will all fall short at times, but inside each Asatruar these moral virtues live and struggle to be come out in our lives. The action of not holding these close to us is like the destruction caused by the Ice Jotans, the sons and daughters of Surt, and the malicious progeny of Loki. Unfortunately today's society is not always quick to reward the Tr? person who lies by these ideals, but all Asatruar will see these qualities within each other, and will know each other by the
expression of these qualities.
But, my kinsmen and kinswomen, these virtues do not describe all aspects of an Asatruar.
The Asatru should be known as people who take a stand! If you are courageous and loyal (Fidelity), then when a friend is threatened you will stand up for him or her. If a right or belief is threatened you will take a stand. So, an Asatruar is a person who is actively involved in their community, perhaps even in politics. A person of power (strength) who is uncorruptable, and stands up for their Rights and the Rights of others will be known as a Hero.
Asatruar should strive to develop their minds to the utmost of their capacity. The Heros of old were honored, not just for their physical prowess, but also for the quick wit, insightful wisdom, clever minds, and even their ability to compose poetry on the fly!
Asatruar should take joy in their life. Our ancestors were explorers, conquerors, lovers,
artists, people of action and consequence, and so should we be. We have the right to take joy in our life, and have the responsibility to our ancestors and our gods and kin to live our lives to their fullest, hardworking, but also full of joy and good cheer to share with our Kin.
