Potluck in the Park (PiP) counts on its volunteer to serve--so please read carefully and please don't sign up if you're one of those regular "No Shows"!
Potluck has been serving a free meal to anyone in need every single Sunday since 1991! Over 50 volunteers serve between 500 and 800 people who are in need of a free, substantial meal every Sunday. I like the thought of exposing new and old Portlanders to the great work that non-profits do in our area--Potluck in the Park is one of those! Potluck is an all-volunteer, grassroots 501(c)3 non-profit organization; read a little about them here: Potluck in the Park.
Volunteers should be aware that this is a direct contact, on-the-ground volunteer experience with direct interactions with people with a wide variety of challenges. That's the great part--no middle folks, no bureaucracy, no layers--right from the volunteer directly to whomever is in need of a meal that day. You will be serving and interacting with people who are confronting challenges--homelessness, mental illness, possibly drug or alcohol issues--as well as anyone who just needs nourishment on a Sunday. If this concerns you, check their Web page to see if it's the right opportunity for you. For me, it's been a great experience that I continue to return to.
Potluck serves rain or shine. If it's raining, we serve underground in the parking lot; if it's nice, it's up in the open air of O'Bryant Square. Transportation and public transit is on their Web site. Free parking in the parking garage underneath; just slowly drive in and find a spot.
