Potluck in the Park (http://www.potluckinthepark.org/) has been serving a free meal to anyone in need every single Sunday 1991. Over 50 volunteers serve between 400 and 800 who are in need of a free, substantial meal every Sunday (not counting the many volunteers behind the scenes). One of my goals is to expose Portlanders to the great work that non-profits do in our area--Potluck in the Park is one of those!

Potluck is an all-volunteer, grassroots 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Here's a link with a little about the organization: Potluck in the Park (http://www.potluckinthepark.org/about/).

Volunteers should be aware that this is direct , on-the-ground work in contact with a variety of people. That's the great part--no middle folks, no bureaucracy, no layers--right from the volunteer directly to whomever is in need of a meal that day. The volunteer coordinator for PiP wants me to mention that volunteers may be working directly with people who are confronting challenges--homelessness, mental illness, possibly drug issues. If this concerns you, check their Web page to see if it's the right opportunity for you.

Since Potluck counts on a set number of volunteers, please don't sign up if there's a good chance that you won't show up. Meet at 2:00 p.m. at the entrance of the underground parking lot. If it rains, they serve underground in the parking lot; if it's decent, they serve above in the park. Transportation and public transit is on their Web site.

Just one last thought--try to bring as little with you as you can as there's a bit of storage under some of the tables but you don't want that to be your worry. If you don't need a purse or backpack, try to leave it behind.
