Data Privacy PDX: Data Privacy for Activists

Fellow Meetup Data Privacy PDX is hosting a free workshop on data privacy tools for activists, led by Greg Stromire. This is not a PDXTech4Good sponsored event, but we highly recommend checking it out. Space is limited, so RSVP by visiting their meetup page today

Event description:

Data privacy is important to everyone, but is felt even more keenly by those who advocate for causes that can be controversial.  Here in Portland, everyone has something they are passionate about, and we often spend our time and energy supporting a good cause.  With privacy concerns being very real for many participants in these causes, organizers must be prepared to provide better privacy protections for the communications and data that are related to their efforts.

This workshop is to introduce foundational data privacy strategies and teach easy solutions for helping activists protect the privacy of those they engage with and themselves.

Greg Stromire will be hosting the workshop and will direct the conversation based on the priorities of attendees, but likely topics will include:

• Environment For Privacy:  Why is Privacy Essential;  Privacy, Security, & Anonymity;  Privacy Law

• Privacy for Communications:  Messaging;  Email;  Voice

• Securing Your Devices:  Mobile Devices;  Personal Computers

• Protected Internet Use:  HTTPS;  Using VPNs;  Best Practices Online

• Data Storage for Private Data:  Encrypted Portable Devices;  Cloud Storage;  Individual Files

This special 2-hour Data Privacy PDX workshop is free to attend and light refreshments will be provided.

RSVP on the Data Privacy PDX event page.

I really enjoyed it, being my first meet in Meetup. We took a wrong exit and got on the freeway so got there 15 minutes late. Sorry. I am very interested in learning a lot more about data privacy and internet safety etc. I'm definitely going to more Data privacy groups. Thanks a bunch.

Hey all, this will be my first pdxtech4good meeting. I work at the intersection of social justice and wearable and mobile tech. I'd love if anyone on the group might test out an app me and my collabirator just released that helps minimum wage workers fight wage theft in oregon:

Would love to hear what you think. Thanks!

Hello, I forgot that tomorrow is the Climate Change organizing summit in Eugene, OR tomorrow and I'm trying to go to that. Sorry, I won't be able to join but this sounds awesome!

There are a lot of RSVPs on this meetup, but you indicate folks need to RSVP on the Data Privacy PDX page. Will the RSVPs here count, or do people need to join the Data Privacy PDX meetup group to attend?

Any chance this will be happening again? I will be out of town this day but I love this workshop!

I recommend joining Data Privacy PDX's meetup to stay linked in - I know they hope to offer it in the future!
