McDowell Regional Park - BEGINNER AND EXPERIENCED RIDERS

McDowell Regional Park has some of the best trails in the valley with fast, flowy trails that will provide a great work out, get you out pedaling and having a blast with other riders!

This event is for beginners and experienced riders.

While the newer riders are learning awesome mountain biking skills in the Skills Clinic followed by a ride, there will be a separate ride for the experienced riders.  We’ll all come back to the parking lot together at the same time and hang out while we cool down.

ANOTHER COOL THING . . . we will be riding with Velofix, a mobile mountain bike repair team who will be checking out bikes after the ride - for FREE!

MEETING TIME

Pre-Ride Meeting:  9:00 a.m. (all participants)  PLEASE BE PROMPT

Skills Clinic and Experienced Ride start:  9:00 a.m.

BEGINNER SKILLS CLINIC

(This clinic will have limited spaces so rsvp soon to reserve your spot!)

This is a great opportunity to learn about the basics of mountain biking where you will learn how critical bike balance is for safe riding, the importance of body and bike separation, proper braking technique and how to shift efficiently.

Instructor Scott Givens, a Level 2 IMBA certified instructor and Pedal With Warriors Board Member, will help you gain confidence as you learn these basic skills.

Participants should have experience in the basic operation of a bicycle to participate.

If you have your own bike, great!  If not, we have a resource for bike rental at a discounted price.  When you RSVP, please answer the question that refers to bike rental.  You will also need the following gear:

·  helmet  (mandatory)

·  gloves

·  sunglasses (eye protection)

·  hydration pack with at least 70 ounces of water (mandatory)

Your mountain bike should have front suspension and tires that are rated for dirt trails. Because desert riding includes cactus thorns, it is recommended that your tubes (if you don’t have tubeless tires) be Slime tubes which contain a sealant to prevent a flat tire.  Any bike shop has these tubes for around $6.00.

EXPERIENCED RIDERS

(This means you should have been on 6-10 mountain bike rides of at least 1.5 hours duration.)

Trails: To Be Determined

Ride Length: 15-18 miles

Ride Duration:  2 hours

Trail Terrain:  Compacted soil, a few sandy washes and a few rocky sections.

Rides are “no one left behind”.  If you have a mechanical problem or are riding at a pace that is comfortable for you, but maybe slower than others - we always wait and re-group.  It is during these re-grouping times where we have time to talk about gear, riding experiences or whatever!

All riders need to be equipped with:

·  A bike in good condition with tires suitable for riding on dirt trails.

·  Helmets and hydration are mandatory.  You will need at least 70 ounces of water.

·  Make sure you have bars or snacks for refueling.  Protein bars, fresh fruit or fig bars are excellent to bring along.

·  Sunscreen

BRING YOUR BEVERAGE AND SNACKS FOR AFTER RIDE HANG OUT

Thanks everyone for coming out! Thanks also to Velofix for being there and helping me diagnose my rear hub problem. I had to bail early and head into town for parts... thanks Tommy for filling in for me!

This was a great meetup. We had fun with the Intro clinic kids (Vicki, Annemarie, and Sergio) and it was good to see the rest of the 'gang' go out for a longer ride. Nice to see Jay in 'recovery' mode. Thanks for everyone who made it such a good day!
