Phoenix Mountain Preserve - Intermediate + Ride

  • Phoenix Mountain Preserve

E Shea Blvd, Phoenix, AZ (map)

    33.571590 -112.004180

  • End of 36th Street, south of Shea Blvd - https://goo.gl/maps/U2i2chKSZz62
  • The Phoenix Mountains Preserve provides a taste of “old school” trails. Many are left over from old mercury mines, which can frequently be seen trail side (though most are little more than small holes in the ground).

This event is for intermediate and advanced riders. We’ll keep it fun, but because of the surrounding terrain, there will be short, technically challenging, rocky climbs and descents. You’ll be rewarded with an adventurous feeling from the amazing views though!

The terrain surface here is quite different from the majority of trails in the Phoenix area. Composed mostly of schist, these thin, irregular plates actually offer surprisingly good traction.

    MEETING TIME
    Pre-Ride Meeting: 8:45 a.m. - PLEASE BE PROMPT
    Ride start: 9:00 a.m.

Route: Very similar to this Strava route: https://www.strava.com/routes/6966140. We’ll ride a mix of Trail 100, 1A, and many side offshoot trails.
All riding will take place on the south side of Freeway 51 (Piestewa).

Ride Length: 10-12 miles, ~1100 ft elevation gain
    Ride Duration: 2.5 hours
Trail Terrain: Generally rocky. Technically challenging terrain, a few rocky/sandy wash crossings. A mix of smooth rolling single track, with short, steep rocky climbs and descents.

All riders need to be equipped with:
    • Helmets and hydration are mandatory. You will need at least 70 ounces of water.
    • Make sure you have bars or snacks for refueling. Protein bars, fresh fruit or fig bars are excellent to bring along.
    • Sunscreen
    • Because of the challenging nature of the terrain, light elbow and knee pads are something to be considered.
