Intro. to Permaculture Course (Permaculture 101)

Pre-requisite: None
This course is the first half of the total Permaculture Design Course being offered for the year 2010.
Participants also have the option of taking the first half this year, and the second half the following year to complete the course. Participants may also choose to take the first half without pursuing certification/completion.

Cost: $400

Session I begins Sat. May 29th
Session II June 12
Session III June 26th
Session IV July 10-11

Class times will start at 9AM and run until roughly 5PM.

The PDC will be taking place at varying locations throughout the Philadelphia Metro Region.
Directions to Session I venue will be sent via email once registration and payment have been processed. (Subsequent session locations will be provided at our first meeting on May 29) Teachers:
Melissa Miles - Environmental Biologist and Conservation planner, Permaculture Designer/Teacher
Paco Verin - Owner of Natural Landscaping business, Horticulturist, Permaculture Designer/Teacher Permaculture Design Work and Certification:
This is a standard 72 hour Permaculture certification course.
Upon completing this course, students will be will be entitled to use the term "Permaculture" in their work, as certified permaculture designers. Students must complete 72 hours of course time, and the final project design and design report in order to attain certification.
Special assignments may be created to allow students to make up missed course time in the event of an emergency. The basic mandate of 72 hours is still required for certification.

What will we learn?
The Intro course will include some, but not all of the following topics.
The PDC total course curriculum will include all, but is not limited to, the following principles and practices:

What is Permaculture?
Natural Patterns & Permaculture Design
The Built Environment, Water & Waste Management
Soils and Geology
Seed Saving and Plant Nurseries
Home and Community Gardens
Kitchen permaculture- fermentation, food storage
Forests, Tree Crops, Forest Gardens
Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
Animal Systems- chickens, small livestock, Aquaculture, vermiculture
Appropriate Technology
Cooperatives and Enterprise Development: LET's systems, financial permaculture
Final Design Project and Report

What to bring:
Water bottle, sun protection, rain-gear (if warranted), appropriate footwear/clothing, a notebook, camera, a packed lunch/snacks and your readiness to learn.
Please refrain from wearing perfumes or fragrances, as it may inadvertently attract insects or affect other participants with sensitivities. Recommended (not required) texts:
* Gaia's Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture. Toby Hemenway. Chelsea Green, 2001 and 2010
* Permaculture: Principles and Pathways Beyond Sustainability. David Holmgren. Holmgren Design Services Publishing, 2002.
