Feb2018: OneBookOnePhilly "Another Brooklyn"
Hey Hipsters and Bibliophiles, [Please note earlier meeting time at 7pm not 7:30] This February we will join in on the One Book, One Philadelphia fun (https://libwww.freelibrary.org/programs/onebook/) Another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson The acclaimed New York Times bestselling and National Book Award–winning author of Brown Girl Dreaming delivers her first adult novel in twenty years. Running into a long-ago friend sets memory from the 1970s in motion for August, transporting her to a time and a place where friendship was everything—until it wasn’t. For August and her girls, sharing confidences as they ambled through neighborhood streets, Brooklyn was a place where they believed that they were beautiful, talented, brilliant—a part of a future that belonged to them. But beneath the hopeful veneer, there was another Brooklyn, a dangerous place where grown men reached for innocent girls in dark hallways, where ghosts haunted the night, where mothers disappeared. A world where madness was just a sunset away and fathers found hope in religion. Like Louise Meriwether’s Daddy Was a Number Runner and Dorothy Allison’s Bastard Out of Carolina, Jacqueline Woodson’s Another Brooklyn heartbreakingly illuminates the formative time when childhood gives way to adulthood—the promise and peril of growing up—and exquisitely renders a powerful, indelible, and fleeting friendship that united four young lives. Another Brooklyn is available on Amazon.com, however, I encourage you all to support your local independent book store or library: City Paper's List of Independent Bookstores (http://www.citypaper.net/articles/2009/03/19/its-a-jungle-out-there) Google Map/Listing of Independent Bookstores in Philly (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&client=firefox-a&q=philadelphia+independent+bookstore&ie=UTF8&z=13) PLEASE ONLY RSVP IF YOU INTEND TO SHOW UP, more than 3 no shows in a row will result in a temporary ban from RSVP-ing until you can assure me you will actually attend. We are having far too many people RSVP and then not showup and people changing their RSVP at the last possible minute preventing other members from being able to attend. You will notice that that if you RSVP "Yes," you'll be charged to attend. This is to help me cover my costs as Organizer and reduce the number of no-shows we have at meetings. Please keep in mind I'm only giving refunds if the meeting is canceled or rescheduled, not if you change your mind about attending. Thinking about coming when the Meetup is FULL? Read/click here. What we're about

    Public Group

We're a book club in Philadelphia with a focus on contemporary literature. We have a lot of members, but don't worry - we wind up with a comfortable number of folks at the meetings. We meet at a bar, diner, or a coffeehouse, so no hosting duties, plenty of room, and you almost never have to buy the book.
