Hip and Well Read February: 1Q84

Hey Hipsters and Bibliophiles,

The people have spoken and our January book will be 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami.

The year is 1984 and the city is Tokyo.
A young woman named Aomame follows a taxi driver’s enigmatic suggestion and begins to notice puzzling discrepancies in the world around her. She has entered, she realizes, a parallel existence, which she calls 1Q84 —“Q is for ‘question mark.’ A world that bears a question.” Meanwhile, an aspiring writer named Tengo takes on a suspect ghostwriting project. He becomes so wrapped up with the work and its unusual author that, soon, his previously placid life begins to come unraveled.
As Aomame’s and Tengo’s narratives converge over the course of this single year, we learn of the profound and tangled connections that bind them ever closer: a beautiful, dyslexic teenage girl with a unique vision; a mysterious religious cult that instigated a shoot-out with the metropolitan police; a reclusive, wealthy dowager who runs a shelter for abused women; a hideously ugly private investigator; a mild-mannered yet ruthlessly efficient bodyguard; and a peculiarly insistent television-fee collector.
A love story, a mystery, a fantasy, a novel of self-discovery, a dystopia to rival George Orwell’s—1Q84 is Haruki Murakami’s most ambitious undertaking yet: an instant best seller in his native Japan, and a tremendous feat of imagination from one of our most revered contemporary writers.

1Q84 is available on, however, I encourage you all to support your local independent book store or library:

PLEASE ONLY RSVP IF YOU INTEND TO SHOW UP, more than 3 no shows in a row will result in a temporary ban from RSVP-ing until you can assure me you will actually attend. We are having far too many people RSVP and then not showup and people changing their RSVP at the last possible minute preventing other members from being able to attend.

You will notice that that if you RSVP "Yes," you'll be charged to attend. This is to help me cover my costs as Organizer and reduce the number of no-shows we have at meetings. Please keep in mind I'm only giving refunds if the meeting is canceled or rescheduled, not if you change your mind about attending.

Thinking about coming when the Meetup is FULL? Read/click here.

Happy Reading!

Excellent discussion as always, and I was impressed that the group size wasn't any smaller than usual in spite of the length of the book!

I am sorry to cancel so late, but I am not feeling well. I wish I could join the discussion, as I need to figure out some way tp process this unusual novel.

I have had to concede that I won't finish by Wednesday. However, I would love to organize a second session if others are interested!

Sorry, looks like I won't finish in time :( I budgeted my time poorly, and this is paced slowly enough (and I actually like Murakami enough) that I can't just blast through it overnight propelled by sheer loathing like Ready Player One.

Half way done; have to be realistic. :-(

I can't be sure i'll be done by then, and i want someone on the list to have my spot. I'm loving it so far, but some times 2 jobs makes committing to things complicated. Have fun whoever gets my spot!
