Hello PhillyPUG,
I'm so grateful to be a part of such a large and active python community in Philadelphia. I wanted to make sure you all knew about some great opportunities for people who code with python to work in journalism!
The most pressing deadline is coming up in one week. August 21 is the last day to apply for the Knight-Mozilla Fellowship (https://opennews.org/what/fellowships). A few folks with Philly ties have joined the fellowship before and it'd be great to have more Philly representation.
The
fellowship is a chance for people who love to solve problems through
code to spend 10 months working with a news technology team to
work on open-source tools and support reporting that strengthens the
web and changes people's lives. Fellows also get to travel the
world to teach, learn, and speak with other people interested in
journalism, code, data, design, and more.
Fellows receive $60,000, as well as a slate of benefits (http://opennews.org/what/fellowships/info/), to support their work doing open source development with a stellar news organization and a supportive fellowship community.
In 2016 Fellows will be placed at:
- Correct!v - Berlin, Germany
- The Coral Project - New York, NY (based out of the New York Times)
- Los Angeles Times Data Desk - Los Angeles, CA
- Vox Media - Austin, TX; New York, NY; or Washington, DC
As
the distribution of news partners suggests, the program is
international and you do not need to be a U.S. citizen to apply. We
assist fellows with travel and work visas. We are an inclusive program
and seek fellows that reflect the diversity of the communities we serve.
No
particular programming language or development background is required
to apply, just experience with code and an interest in journalism. Does
that sound like you? If so, apply (http://opennews.org/what/fellowships/apply)!
The
application itself is very quick: five questions, no brain teasers, no
recommendations to track down. We want to hear from you and learn more
about how you want to contribute your skills to journalism.
Do you have any questions? Feel free to email me. I'm also happy to set up a time to chat.
If you are interested in the fellowship, I do hope you apply before August 21. Thanks for your time!
-Erika
