Re: [philosophy-180] Solstice sign added to holiday display in Milwaukee Courthouse

I am taken aback by this "Winter Solstice" email.  The subject matter is not philosophical in nature, but rather concerns the issue of what we in public administration refer to as governance.  In terms of governance, it defies all reason that a nativity display would in any way violate the establishment clause.  It would appear a better use of resources to simply abide by Cohen v California.

Carol, please refrain from sending me such emails in the future.  I joined Socrates Cafe and not

Subject: [philosophy-180] Solstice sign added to holiday display in Milwaukee Courthouse

An “equal time” Winter Solstice display by the Freedom From Religion Foundation was placed inside the Milwaukee County Courthouse to protest and provide balance to an annual nativity display.

FFRF's Winter Solstice sign reads:

"At this season of the Winter Solstice, let reason prevail. There are no gods, no devils, no angels, no heaven or hell. There is only our natural world. Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds."

The back reads: “State/Church: Keep Them Separate.”

The sign will be monitored to be sure it remains there. If anyone wants to check on it, don't go on the weekend as the courthouse is only open in weekdays. Too bad there wasn't more advance notice. A supportive crowd would have really been 'news.'

Meanwhile, check local news to see if it has been covered.
