Remember getting your first bike?
Please join the Phoenix Philanthropists for this very fun Recycle Your Bicycle event, repairing and polishing bicycles, and make that first-bike dream come true for many underprivileged children this holiday season. Last year, together with other groups, the Phoenix Philanthropists helped refurbish over 700 bikes for foster care children.
We have hundreds of bikes needing refurbishing, so much help is needed to get these bikes ready for holiday gifts. So please come help us make a difference for foster care children--and stir up those old wonderful memories of your first bike.
The event takes places each Saturday until mid-December, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers are welcome to work the full shift, or a minimum two-hour shift anytime during the four-hour event. Please RSVP, and simply note in comments what hours you will work, if not the full four-hour shift.
There are several duties from which volunteers can choose, including light and heavy mechanical work under the guidance of the former U.S. Bike Team Technician; power washing; and detailing. In detailing, which requires the most volunteers, volunteers will Armor All tires, polish frames and clean wheel rims. All bike parts and cleaning supplies are provided. Mechanics are always needed, but absolutely no experience is necessary.
WHAT TO BRING
Sunscreen, hats, and, as temperatures cool, jackets, as most work takes places outside, either in the sun or under covered parking awnings. Some members also bring stools or collapsible chairs (you know, like at soccer games). Volunteers may want to bring a ground cover as many of us work in the parking lot.
Wear comfortable clothing that you would wear for yard work.
The minimum age to volunteer is 10 years old, with a parent or legal guardian. Many Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and kids from schools will be there to help.
FREE FOOD & DRINKS
Volunteers can enjoy complimentary beverages and lunch.
