An Evening with Chris Mooney

Skeptics -

I am excited to announce an evening with a skeptic celebrity: Chris Mooney. Chris is a journalist, author of several books, and co-host of the skeptic podcast Point of Inquiry. He is visiting Phoenix to talk about his recent book The Republican Brain: The Science of Why They Deny Science--and Reality. This book is about the science of politics: why we believe what we believe. Anyone who has watched Fox News knows there is definitely something that needs to be explained. Chris does just just that.

From Amazon:

"Science writer Chris Mooney explores brain scans, polls, and psychology experiments to explain why conservatives today believe more wrong things; appear more likely than Democrats to oppose new ideas and less likely to change their beliefs in the face of new facts; and sometimes respond to compelling evidence by doubling down on their current beliefs."

This should be fun, informative, and controversial. There will be a social meetup directly after the talk where you will be able to meet Chris and hang out with your fellow skeptics. Food and drink will be available, as usual. Space is limited, so sign up today!

Chris has an excellent podcast - Point of Inquiry. (I listen to podcasts a lot as I'm walking my dogs.) The Aug 21, 2012 podcast was his interview with Arie Kruganski - who Chris mentioned in his presentation. I had to listen to that one twice.

Facebook says you’re smart if you like curly fries or Stephen Colbert. Study claims Facebook "likes" can be a very accurate way to assess a person's IQ, political leanings and lifestyle. Due to the large response we have upgraded to a larger meeting room. There will be plenty of seats for everyone!

Humanist, Atheist, & Liberal Ladies groups also know about this. I worry that there might not be seats if you're not early.

We upgraded to a larger room. Don't worry!

I don't think there is going to be enough seating! 65 of 70 already here, plus attendees coming from other Meetup groups who may have rsvped there but not necessarily here? Yikes.
