RE: [skepticsinphoenix] Action Alert: Object to 10 Commandments Monument

FYI: here is the letter I wrote o my reps and the leadership:

Dear Senators and Congressmen,

Please end any consideration of support of Senate Bill 1213. We the citizens of Arizona don't need the controversy OR the spending! This isn't the time for grandstanding legislation only done for the records or to satiate core constituents, but for serious work to make our government run better. We the citizens deserve AND demand better legislation and better use of our representatives' time.

Object to Ten Commandments Monument Bill

February 3, 2010

Dear FFRF Arizona Member:

Arizona state Sen. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa and cosponsors Rep. Judy Burges, R-Skull Valley, Rep. Steve Court, R-Mesa, and Rep. Carl Seel, R-Phoenix, have introduced a bill (Senate Bill 1213) to place a Ten Commandments monument in front of the original 1898 Arizona capitol in Phoenix by 2011. The Foundation considers this a monumentally bad idea (see press release from Jan. 29).

Rep. Seel revealed the bill's impermissible religious purpose, when he said, "Clearly the foundation of our nation is a Judeo-Christian ethic."

Please send a message to your state representative and senator, and the political leadership behind this bill, asking them to keep state and church separate and uphold our secular Constitution by voting down this offensive legislation (even a one-line sentence is effective). Please keep messages brief and civil, and sign your name and address. It would also be helpful to make this the subject of a letter to the editor sent to local papers (see contact info below). For maximum effectiveness, write as an individual and not as someone responding to an action alert. Please do not forward this action alert to government officials. We are pleased to receive blind copies of your messages by e-mail at [address removed]. Thank you for your help!

TALKING POINTS: The foundation of our nation is the entirely secular U.S. Constitution, whose only references to religion in government are exclusionary. There is no 'god,' much less a reference to the Ten Commandments or to 'Judeo-Christianity' in the Constitution. The State of Arizona has no business telling citizens which god they must have, how many gods they must have, or that they ought to have any god at all. This bill would make political outsiders of the 17% of the adult population in Arizona that identifies as nonreligious, who reject not only the god of the Old Testament, but the very idea of a "divine code" (see the American Religious Identification Survey 2008). Also see FFRF press release (linked above) and Foundation nontract: "What's Wrong with the Ten Commandments?"
