Help Portrait Movement event!

We need at least 50 volunteers for this event. Even more would be helpful. We expect to serve[masked] clients throughout the day.

OK gang, we will be having an event on December 12, 2009 to volunteer for the Help Portrait movement. Here is a quick description from their website.

HELP PORTRAIT IS A MOVEMENT OF PHOTOGRAPHERS WHO ARE USING THEIR TIME, EQUIPMENT AND EXPERTISE TO GIVE BACK TO THOSE WHO ARE LESS FORTUNATE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON.

We will be getting use of a rather substantial space at Regency Mall in Racine (probably the vacant anchor store space in the front and center of the mall.) The event will be taking place all day on December 12th. We are hoping to get as many photographers involved in this as possible. We are asking photographers to commit to at least *ONE* three hour block on Saturday (9am-noon, noon-3pm, 3pm-6pm, 6pm-9pm.) We will need help not only in taking portraits, but as lighting assistants, people to work the check in table, runners, etc. Whether you are a snapshooter, or a "legend" your talents will be helpful. We especially need hair stylists and Make Up Artists that are willing to donate a few hours of their time as well. If you know of anyone, PLEASE contact them.

We hope to have at least 4 lighting setups in place for the day. The setups will be arranged for standard portrait lighting. We will also be having a lab donate the prints for the day. We expect to have coverage from local media (radio, newspapers, TV)

THIS SUNDAY afternoon at 4pm, we will be having a meeting (At Faith Community Church in Racine) to discuss further details about the event. If you would like to join us, let me or Timmie know. Please go to the Help Portrait website, take a look around and check out the videos. Thanks,
Timmie (and Mike) and Michael (not the same as Mike)

Thanks everyone for participating. I'm pretty certain that we will be able to do this again next year and with more time for planning we can work out any kinks we had this year. Any feedback is much appreciated! Also, for those that expressed concern regarding the clientele, we did contact and put fliers up in all the homeless shelters, battered women etc. I think part of the problem may have been transportation and the amount of notice. Next year, I'd like to arrange drivers possibly from each location, just an idea. Also, I'm so happy that we were to service so many people irregardless of their stature. We had about 180 families participate for a total of around 600 people! That's amazing!

Great time, I was there from 11 am until 10pm when we were all packed up and out the door. Very friendly group to work with, and we served quite a few families. I hope I can make any future events.

It was an example of how people while getting together and while using their hobby, managed to give something back to the comunity as it was a great cause and that in itself is always a great thing to do.
Volunteers had a great time, we all learn a few things and people where very happy to get something that will last for a long time.

This was a great day. I took lots of pictures of families, and lots of kids. It was great to help some many families capture a memory. Most people won't look back on this and say "why did I get a picture taken of me and my kids- that was a bad idea."

I thought the idea was wonderful, however the event we had did not target the people that I thought it was going to. The people that participated in the event were people shopping in the mall. If some of the local charity groups had been contacted, such as homless shelters, foster homes, parole officers, battered womens groups, low income housing offices, it would have been better. I would say that most of the people in our group could have afforded to purchase their own photos elsewhere.

I loved participating and so did my adult children, we will definately do this again. One more thought, I think there should have been a person specifically assigned to the volunteers for their needs, i.e. water, snacks, breaks. One family was volunteering the entire 12 hours of the event and I never saw anyone ask them if they needed a break.

What a heart warming day, OMG. We couldn't of had any nicer people come thru our lines. I KNOW we brought many smiles to many faces today. THANK YOU for putting this together. It was well worth the drive dwon from Green Bay.

The Help Portrait event was very well organized and coordinated. It was fun to help in the photo editing station and get to chat with other photographers. I look forward to volunteering for this event next year.

I am not sure what went wrong. I thought information was sent out to families that had little income to give there holiday a little bit more meaning. What I found was, we were bring people in walking down the hall to have there images taken. This is not what I thought this was about.
I did think the concept was a good one, and everyone on the shift I was on was warm and friendly and helpful.
Thanks to Gary for giving me insight on Lightroom 2. Sandy Henry

Do you still need backdrops and background stands? I have a dark gray textured muslin backdrop and stands. They are my recent purchase still in box. I will be happy to bring them. Let me know.

Timmie, just wondering... have we talked about backdrops at all? I know I am bringing in lights, but we really don't have any backdrops to bring in. If someone has some nice, neutral muslins, and some background stands, should they bring them in?

"We are INSIDE the mall, in the old Steve and Barry's space, very near the mall entrance to JC Penney. BIG wide open space."

I can edit pretty fast, I use Imagenomic Portraiture as well as CS4. No more than 5 minutes per photo for simple clean up and they are ready to go. Let me know if you want me to edit or shoot or both once you get things more organized.

I don't plan on doing major blemish removals etc. We will however, need people to bring their laptops/pc's to do small editing and possible burning of discs....

Pam Rugen and I will come and shoot or help in any other way....

Are we going to do any cleanup of the shots, facial blemishes etc? I was going to bring my laptop, and can do mine if we have time, or if you were going to have a couple of people doing only that, I can either shoot photos or do image editing full time. What ever helps you the most.

Thanks for everyone who has signed up for this event so far! Timmie is currently trying to nail down a meeting location for this Sunday. We are planning on meeting at about 4pm somewhere on the north side of Racine.

Where are the details for the Sunday evening meetup? Is that an open meeting or are the organizers just getting together to finalize details?
