Waterford Balloon Fest

A yearly favorite! The Waterford Balloon Fest is a GREAT event that offers a lot of fun and photo ops.

The Festival goes on all weekend, but, we will meet on Saturday at noon on the SOUTH end of the launch area. You can shoot from wherever you like, but, for the way I shoot, the south end has worked best for me. For more details about the event, go to: http://www.waterford-wi.org/waterford_balloon_fest.html

Went there on Sunday morning, and was fortunate enough to get some airborne and landing photos offsite from festival grounds:

Last night's news said the balloon pulled the pickup truck backwards. No report on vendor damages though. Hmph!

      July 19, 2015

    • Jim M

It's amazing that no one got hurt, and in essence the balloon at that point was more of a sail than anything else, and could drag the truck along.

nature take control with the unexpected. Ended up helping with the runaway balloon

Just got the "official" word that event is cancelled for tonight. Tomorrow is still a go, weather permitting.

    July 18, 2015

  • Michael Lee L.

So, uh, now that I finally have wifi down here in "the pit" (where they herded us to when the sirens went off) I'm gonna go ahead and say the event is cancelled today. Feel free to try again tomorrow, but I won't be able to make it. To all you new faces we didn't get a chance to meet today, please consider coming to one of our events we have scheduled.

Excitement this morning as a wind gust untethered a balloon and blew it through the crowd.

    July 18, 2015

    • sue D.

How soon will they cancel if the winds are too gusty? Also there is a good chance of strong thunder storms in the area.

It was gorgeous as I was driving home from Kenosha. What happened to the sky? I may still drive out, but it doesn't look like an idyllic day for the balloon fest.

Michael, Joel Carter and I will be going for the 5:30 launch time.

    July 17, 2015

  • Michael Lee L.

After checking the schedule of events, and especially since the weather is going to be HOT... I've pushed back the meeting time to 3PM... You are absolutely free to show up earlier as there is stuff going on all day.

I'm going to go for sunrise in hopes of not getting caught in the afternoon rain.

I'm concerned about the rain now. Likelihood of launches being cancelled?

    July 17, 2015

  • Jim M

Hey I may join in, but does anyone know what is the best vantage point for shooting the balloons particularly for photography during the the sunrise ascension?

    Thanks!

In my opinion the balloons would look better back lit by the sun, but I'm not sure what part of the field that would be.

The Launch is at 5.30 am and 9 pm ! ? Isn't 12 pm too early?

    1 · July 13, 2015

    • Michael Lee L.

However, it isn't necessary to show up right at noon. If you would rather show up later, just to shoot the launch, that's no problem. Just remember that if you show up too late, parking will be nearly impossible, and it might be tought to get an unobstructed view of the launch until the balloons are all in the air.

I have a kit lens and a 50 mm, will the 50 work for this outing?

    1 · July 13, 2015

    • Joel C.

A 50mm will work however you would find more use with a wide angle 20-24mm

      July 14, 2015

    • EJ F.

      Thank you Joel.

Hi! I will be there, however plan on going in the evening. A friend of mine is having an annual party where the balloons fly over her home. It's an exciting event I look forward to every year! :)

I am also looking forward to balloon fest newbie wondering if 50mm lens good for this ocassion

    May 27, 2015

    • Michael Lee L.

50mm lens should be fine, but you may want to consider something even wider. Keep in mind you will be (in some cases), less than 50 feet away from a balloon that, when fully inflated, could be[masked] feet tall. A longer lens is useful for after the balloons launch, but keep in mind, depending on the wind, once the balloons launch, they are gone in a matter of minutes. 95% of your shooting will most likely be 50mm or wider.

      1 · May 28, 2015

    • Joel C.

Carrie the last time I shot balloons was in NC Michael is right 20-70mm is the majority of the shooting you will do. Also bring a tripod in case they do a moon glow.

  • sue D.

What time is the launch? Isn't it much later in the day?

    July 12, 2015

    • Sharon

I was thinking the same thing. It looks like they launch early in the morning and much later in the day.
