Virtual Photo Challenge: Highs and Lows

  • Jun 6, 2012 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Do you ever wonder what it's like to be a child, so low to the ground, inspecting blades of grass and pebbles? And conversely, what would it be like to view the world from the sky, or from a tree-top perch looking down on all the busy-ness below? Have you tried to shoot upwards, or downwards, to get a new "slant" on the scene and add interest by capturing different perspectives?

This Virtual Challenge is designed to provide an opportunity to show points-of-view shooting upwards and downwards, or representing what it's like to be low down to the ground, or high in the sky, using your camera... and your imagination. You can perch high and shoot downwards, or you can get down low and shoot upwards... you can represent High and Low anyway you like. It's up to you.

INSTRUCTIONS:

For this challenge, we change up the rules from last time, so please read carefully...

If you sign up, you must plan to post your single best image, and you may post up to 3 pictures in total. All photos must be your own work and taken during the period between the start and end dates of the challenge. You are allowed one additional photo from your personal archive, if you like.

HOW IT WORKS:

Your personal challenge starts when you RSVP to join us on the challenge. For the time between the start and end dates of the challenge, you will go out into your world and play. You may post photos to the Challenge photo album at any time throughout the challenge, and you may continue to post your photos after the challenge ends.

As an aid to other members, you are encouraged to add a caption that explains how you created your image (such as setting and processing notes)... and a few words about your interpretation of the challenge, if not clearly apparent.

All group members are encouraged to enjoy the photos that are posted by the participants of this challenge and add comments of encouragement and appreciation :)

REMEMBER: we will NOT meet in person because this is a VIRTUAL challenge. There will be no judging and no prizes. If you sign up for the challenge, you are making a personal agreement with yourself to take photos and then post your best photos as laid out in the instructions. :)

Enjoy!!!!

for an online challenge, it forced me to be creative (not like I never strive for that anyway), and practice angles.

We learned what not to do with this challenge... don't set start and end dates unless we intend for the attendance to be limited to the "start date". Have an actual date to work towards, and allow photos to be posted after the event. But, all in all a good turnout, great photos taken for the challenge, and great level of participation. Thanks everyone for hangin' in there with us while we worked through the glitches! Bigger and better challenges are in the works!

Would like the posting deadline to be 1-2 days after the cut-off. Allows time assess photos captured before submitting.

I liked the theme, but the experimental new format of "post as you go" made it feel, to me, like it lacked a bit of focus somehow. I think it's easier to view everyone's submissions and make comments with the former method...ie submitting within a few days of a single deadline date. My 2¢ :)

Really enjoyed this photo challenge and seeing what images were posted.

De Red: we have a glitch with the RSVPs for this event. I have added you - but you have less than one day before the events ends... Happy shooting! :)

Hi Trish, I clicked to participate in this Virtual Photo Challenge, but I don't see myself included here. Is there anything I need to do? Or...?
    Thank you, De Red

This challenge isn't as easy as it seems... three more days to take photo for this challenge - it ends Sunday night. Happy shooting!

Thanks Aygul, you've been added :)

  • Aygul

I'd like to participate too. Thank you!

  • Trish

OK, Frank. You're added! I'm glad you're able to officially join us! :)

    June 8, 2012

  • Frank

i'd like to be added to this event. thanks!

    June 8, 2012

  • Trish

Wow, that's too bad, Kat. Sorry to hear it. Do you have an old point and shoot or phone camera you can use, just for fun? :D

    June 8, 2012

  • Trish

OK folks - IF YOU'RE TRYING TO RSVP FOR THIS EVENT, the post your comment here and I'll add you using the backend tools. (Carissa, David and Sherwin, you've been added.)

  • Trish

OK, I've heard back from Meetup HQ and I got a canned answer that they cannot change a date once it's in the past. That's hewy, but we can work with it...

    June 7, 2012

  • Trish

Carissa, if you make a mistake and upload the wrong photo, then for sure delete it. But changing your mind after people have seen your photo or commented on it isn't good. If you have a burning desire to post yet another fantastic photo to share, after you've reached your limit, you can go over the limit by one if you absolutely must. But for this challenge, it's 3 Max (plus one from your archive).

I have question - can you add and remove photos from the album as long as we do not go over the album limit? Thanks.

  • Gerry H.

What it you had an end date & time posted and it starts NOW, as in when you post the challenge?

    June 6, 2012

  • Allan W

I think I prefer the one date. Or maybe I'm just used to that. But if the consensus is to use the date range, I'm sure I'll adapt.

    June 6, 2012

  • Trish

In the meantime, tell me what you think about using the Start and End dates to our advantage, or revert back Next Time to the one date?

    June 6, 2012

  • Trish

Sorry folks. I thought by using the fancy new functions on the site for "start" and "end" dates, I was home-free! I now have to ask Meetup.com to fix it for me. Please check back. I will let you know when it's fixed by posting again here. Thanks for your patience! In the meantime, just go ahead and post your photos to the album if you wish and signup later. Sorry for the confusion!

I cannot RSVP, too. I'll wait for updates.

    June 6, 2012

  • David B.

I get the same problem as Carissa. The problem likely is that the dates are listed as June 6th to June 17th and it is already June 6th. I do plan to participate but Meetup thinks the meetup has already happened. You may have to replace this with a new meetup on June 17th only.

I cannot RSVP-it says the meetup has already occurred.

    June 6, 2012

  • Angela

as much as I enjoy these, I have to ask since I'm new here: are there any physical meet ups in the works? Even just a casual one

    June 5, 2012

  • Trish

Neil! Mood changes are definitely in if you'd like to play with the theme! :)
