Abandoned Philadelphia Coal Pier

There is an old abandoned coal pier here in Philly. Let's get some gritty urban shots. The GPS coordinates are 39°59'25"N 75°9'3"W. There will be gritty urban grafitti and such.

This is the description from Wikipedia:

Part of the Reading Railroad's Port Richmond complex, this was one of the primary transfer points for anthracite coal between Pennsylvania's coal fields and the international market. The pier had two tracks and was once equipped with a large McMyler side car dumper, which would lift coal cars from the rails and dump their contents into waiting barges anchored along the side of the pier.

By the mid 1970s, the coal industry was declining rapidly. After the Reading Company was absorbed by Conrail, the pier, and (most of) the rest of the port, was abandoned. The coal dumper was scrapped and removed at a later date.

We're going early on a cold morning to keep the rifraf to a minimum.  We'll be staying together as a group.

Cops just came back and kicked everyone off the pier. They said its federal property now they said they are going to start arresting people. Be careful if you go back. Or I wouldn't. Lol.

I guess we can cross this one off of our list for the future. No need to take chances. We can find more places, there are many.

If the police were in black, they were GSA police. This still sounds fishy.

I'm gonna bail. The last time I was there the sky was all washed out. I wanted a nice blue sky with some clouds. Not looking like it today.

i can say that tomorrow is definitely no for me.
I hope that this paticular meetup could be done again in the summer.
it will look as cool overgrown with weeds.
i just cant wear a 'boot' in the kind of treacherous walking it sounds like.
be well have fun and look forward to meeting you all at another meet with a little less snow and ice.

Honestly, guys, do you think those backroads are going to be ploughed until Sunday?... and if so, what equipment should we wear for the deep snow on the field, until we reach the pier... and if we reach the pier, I dunno, I truly wonder if it is worth all our effort to find there what? a thick blanket of snow and ice everywhere, eventually tampered by our very own footprints? I, of course, will be there, but I still wonder...

    February 14, 2014

    • Bujor

Very valid points and nice shots indeed... RJ, my mind was made up, and, as I said, I'll be there. As a matter of fact, I'll drive there right now, to see what the situation is.

Take I-95 south to the Allegheny Exit. At the bottom of the ramp make right onto Allegheny. Go to the first traffic light (maybe 30 yards) and make a left onto Richmond Street. Go one mile south on Richmond to Cumberland Street. You could also get off at Girard ave and follow signs for Aramingo. Make a left onto N. Delaware ave. You would have to go South on Delaware and make a U-turn. There is some construction around there, so I wouldn't advise it.

    February 14, 2014

  • Tony F.

Please be aware that Cumberland is closed between Richmond and Beach. If you want to drive right to the entrance, you have to come in through Schirra Dr (along side Berry & Homer) and then got north on Beach.

    February 13, 2014

    • Elizabeth

I am looking at the map and it looks like going south on I-95 it is best to take Aramingo Ave exit, it becomes N. Delaware Ave., keep going. At E. Columbia Ave. turn left, at dead end facing Penn Treaty Park turn left onto Beach St. Go back north on Beach street to Susquahanna Ave.

Y do not want to go north on that stretch of Beach Street. It is usually torn up.

    February 13, 2014

most GPS's will do cross streets. It is exactly at North Beach Street and East Cumberland Street, where they intersect.

I am a maybe. It depends on the conditions Sunday after we get hit with some more snow. I would have to drag my knee walker along with me, while wearing a boot. I get around pretty good, so dont fret about the gritty conditions for me to walk around with the boot. I look forward to taking the photos with some snow.
