I have a couple of ideas. Not sure if these could be called ambitious, but they are more ambitious than a walk around the town (although I do love simple walks). One is the Hot Air Balloon festival. It is on October 17-19 in Statesville (about 2 hour drive) -- I went last year and it was the most colorful thing I have ever experienced. Another one is Sylvian Heights Bird Park in Scotland Neck (about 1 hour 40 min drive). Always wanted to go, but never got around to it.

Oh, and there is always the Museum of Life and Science in Durham. Minimal travel time and a lot of fun things to photograph.

I will be happy to organize any of these.
