Hey there--is it too late to jump in the discussion for July?

    June 22, 2013

    • Niki P.

Diane, yes please, if you'd like to join us in July just go to that meetup date/event and RSVP so you end up on the waiting list. Often folks'll update their RSVP as the date gets closer and they realize they can't make it, which opens up spots for folks on the waiting list. Hope to see you!

I was at Bryce and Zion National Parks. Food at the lodge restaurants was pretty good. I started a little blog about eating vegan on the road on this trip - see http://escaroletrail.... if you want to check out what and where we ate.

The Escarole Trail - I lOVE it! I hope you keep posting about your local adventures in eating vegan too!

I just listened to and interview of Timothy Pachirat on Our Hen House from April of 2012 (actually it was published on my birthday!) and it was a great continuation of our discussion yesterday. Wow. He's definitely one of my new heroes in this life. I strongly identify with his "politics of meat" as well as his views on our relations other humans and the paralells with how we treat non-human animals. It's a good listen if you have the time: http://www.ourhenhouse.org/2012/04/episode-118-todays-problems-cannot-be-solved-if-we-still-think-the-way-we-thought-when-we-created-them/

I... I... I... overslept! In addition, despite having the book for weeks, I haven't read a page. I'm going to come in later today though and pick up my Campbell book.

This. Is brutal. I am still at the begining of the book, but determined to read a majority before tomorrow. Interestingly, and very much to the point, I think, it is much easier to read the parts where the animals have already been transformed into some thing more resembling distilled product than living being. Still, brutal to face. To imagine it happening day in and day out. See you all tomorrow with at least some of this book under my belt-

Is it o.k. for me to stop by to say hello even if I have not read the book? If not, that's o.k., and someone else can take my space. I also am excited about the GAP event on Saturday! Confession: I want everyone to know about the Grand Opening of Schwartz Living Market in the South Side at 1317 East Carson Street on June 21, 22 and 23, 2013 from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. We are finishing the kitchen right now and our plans are that the kitchen will be mostly RAW vegan... Go to http://1317eastcarson.blogspot.com for details and Like Schwartz Living Market on Facebook y'all. Most of all come visit and tell all of your friends to visit too!!! Elisa Beck :)

    June 14, 2013

    • Niki P.

Elisa, Im sorry if this sounds like a silly question, but are you actually coming to stay for the book club discussion? If so please RSVP to save yourself a spot. If not, I'd be happy to pass on the grand opening info you shared, to make sure people hear about it. We normally do a quick announcement or two before the discussion starts

      June 14, 2013

    • Niki P.

Oh Yeay, you RSVP'ed-- I didn't see that! Cool!!! We'll see you tmw then!!!

      June 14, 2013

  • Jeffrey C.

I hope everyone is getting through the book OK. Sure, parts of it are difficult to read, even if we vegans have disconnected ourselves from the killing of animals. But this book, especially toward the end, is incredibly insightful and revealing. Hang in there!

    1 · June 10, 2013

    • Niki P.

I thought it was fascinating in some parts, horrifying in other parts.... but also humanizing in some ways I didn't expect. I've never read a book on the slaughterhouse end of things before-- and while parts of it were hard, I appreciated the parts where it expanded my thinking, and I learned a lot that I didn't know. Skimming or skipping encouraged where needed-- but I encourage everyone to read it

      2 · June 11, 2013

    • Sarah

I'm happy to say that while it's very difficult, it's also been a very interesting read. Goes way beyond what I was expecting. Looking forward to the discussion tomorrow!

Compare and contrast what you're reading in "Every 12 Seconds" with this ridiculous American Meat Institute video:

This movie pissed me off in, like, the first 30 seconds. Grrr!

      June 13, 2013

    • Sarah

Um. Am I missing something? How is this "humane" processing? How is this a "high standard of animal welfare"? Wow. I'm pissed off now too.

  • Niki P.

BIG NEWS!!!!!! Sooooooo, I got an email yesterday from Timothy Pachirat, saying that he found out about the book club and wants to make himself available for a Q&A this Saturday, during our meeting!!!! I'm in the process of working out the details with him and talking to Lars to make sure Skype will work in TBI basement.... so stay tuned: I'll be sure to let you know if this works out!!! In the meantime, be sure to start gathering your questions for Timothy: What an awesome opportunity!!!!

Wow - this is amazing! Way to go, Niki!

      June 11, 2013

Of course, this is the first book club I'm going to miss and the author joins us...! :-P But enough about me -- this is amazing!! Thank you Niki for arranging it, and I can't wait to hear how it goes! :-)

I know this has nothing to do with June, but I wanted to confirm that I just ordered 11 copies of the July book ("Whole") for: Colleen
    Sarah S
    Kate
    Rosemary
    Pierce
    Marc
    me
    Annah
    Sean
    Angela
    Jeff

    Thanks all!!!!!!

I'll be reading the book but I don't think I'll be able to join the conversation. June 15 is the opening of the Homestead/Sandcastle portion of the Great Allegheny Passage Trail. This is the long awaited finishing of the trail that runs from Pittsburgh to D.C. There will be festivities all the way from downtown into Homestead. I hope to be there for the July meet-up.

    May 18, 2013

    • Niki P.

That's super important-- I've had my eye on it for a while, so I totally understand!!!! We'll miss you!!!!!

      May 20, 2013

  • Niki P.

I'm gonna wait a few days to put the order in at The Big idea: If anyone plan to attend and wants to join in on the order, please let me know ASAP! Thanks!!!

    May 18, 2013

    • Jeffrey C.

Put me down for one Whole, if it's not too late. Thanks Niki!

Oooops, Sarah, you're 100% right, thanks so much for clarifying-- we've already ordered and picked up Every 12 seconds, and anyone who doesn't have a copy will need to pick one up on their own. The order I'm putting in is the book for July!!!!! (And Pierce, yes, I have you in for that one!)
