I'm really sorry all but, as I shared with Niki, I've now got another meeting today that I need to be at, so will have to bow out this round. (A group of activists from around the county I've been working with on a campaign to keep fracking out of our Allegheny County Parks scheduled late this week our final meeting before a bit event we're holding this Tues and, of course, its this morning!) Till September (if not much sooner!)...

Yes - for sure! The event we're planning is listed here: http://www.marcellusp... currently is to sign up and speak at the next few county council meetings - starting with this Tues Aug 20, most importantly, as they're returning from a few month recess and the County Executive (Rich Fitzgerald) who already sold the rights to frack at Pittsburgh International and the County Airport in West Mifflin, with the approval of the Council, has been working to get a bid on fracking at the parks (currently Deer Lakes Park.)

Oh - and sorry if folks didn't want an off-topic post here! Just realized you probably meant for me to PM you, Sara! (Although, fracking does *plenty* to harm animals too...) :-/

Aww so bummed, but working a double shift from yesterday evening and overnight last night kicked my butt. I think I will have to go home and sleep instead! Can't wait to hear about the interview with Peter Laufer!!

I thought I could pull off being able to escape for a few hours, but sadly, a huge work project means I will not be able to come tomorrow. Loved this book, and was looking forward to the conversation. See you in September, definitely!

We'll discuss ideas related to formatting briefly at the start of our next meeting, since posting isn't everyone's cup of tea: Some folks don't check the site often, some don't like getting constant message notifications, some don't even have their meetup account set to GET message notifications in the first place.... So please, try to come on time for the August meeting so that everyone can be included in the introductions and a brief discussion.

I will assume that "try to come on time" was NOT directed at me, of course... ha ha! ;-) Also, I was one of those ppl who turned off Meetup post email notifications, since I was getting way too many, but upon checking the pages see I've been missing out on lively discussion! (I've turned it back on now, BTW!) I'll add my two cents at the meeting but a quick thought I had re making sure that everyone gets to be heard is this "step forward/step back" idea. Essentially, the group agrees that people who are usually the quietest are given space to "step forward" to do more sharing, while those who share the most try to "step back". The point is just for all to be more cognizant of the balance - no specific rules that I know of. Just a thought! :-)

no, no, no,! I just meant, that if we're gonna have a discussion about this at the start of the meeting, people should try to *be there* at the start the meeting so they dont missit! Your thought though, Sarah, is exactly on point: I don't wanna drastically restructure our meetings across the board. it's of the uptmost importance, however, that everyone feels included. That'll likely involve 1) everyone being more mindful of the "fall back/step forward" idea, but also 2) me being *really* mindfull of it as the facilitator and helping it happen if needed. also, like I said, if anyone wants to restructure things into small groups, for example, when its "thier month", I think that's cool too

Have there been any discussions about changing the format of the book club? I've been in a book club/classes in the past that had breakout sessions and they aided in hearing from different people

When there's the amount of people we have around the table, it's hard to hear from everybody. The breakout sessions would allow us to talk about a sub-topic in smaller groups and then kind of come back and hear from a representative from each group and get their synthesized response The groups were also formed by counting off, which helped ensure people within the group interacted with different members each time

During a recent debate\Q&A session between Abolitionists and welfarists, the author commandeered a wireless microphone, cut about 15 people waiting in line, and then asked a lame leading question, of which granted, there were a lot

I haven't been able to attend an event yet (just joined), but I'll chime by saying through work experience, I am not a fan of break out sessions. They rush groups to complete discussions at the same time, and that is difficult to do. It's stifling. Then when the whole group reconnects someone needs to be the speaker for each group. It seems great information is always left out or the meaning was altered in some way. I think breakout sessions are good for establishing a quick result while giving (sometimes forcing it seems) everyone to weigh in on a subject. Often it shuts me down because I don't like feeling forced to speak up on every talking point.
