EVENT MUST KNOWS:

  • We will meet inside the restaurant at 7:15pm, and will begin ordering dinner at 7:30pm.

  • Family-Style Dining: Dining for this event has been designated as Family-Style. The food bill will be split evenly between all attendees. Attendees will be responsible for paying for their own beverages. Please note that flexibility is an important part of family-style dining, and if you want to take a chance on attending, you have to be amenable to what the group/AO will order. You don't have to eat everything that is ordered, but everyone pays equally, whether you eat everything or not. Why this policy? The goal for family-style dining is to allow for the entire group to sample as wide a variety of dishes as possible. If one or more attendees choose to order on their own, that limits the group's choices, which defeats the purpose of what Family-Style Dining is all about.  In addition, most of the dishes we order will be moderately to very spicy. If this definition of Family-Style Dining doesn't feel comfortable, this may not be the right type of event for you.
  • Cost per person is anticipated to be about $25.00, depending on how much food we order, any beverages plus tax and gratuity.  Please bring at least $40.00 in CASH to settle your portion of the bill.
  • Parking is located in their private lot.  Street parking is also an option.  Just be sure to read the street signs for any parking restrictions.
  • The night before this event, I will email my cell number to all attendees so that you can call or text me if you arrive before I do, or are running late, or are lost.

OK, my dinner at Spicy City did not turn out to be as spicy as I would have liked.  Also, I find the quality of some of the meat to be on the fattier side.  So much for a newer restaurant.  Rather, let's try one that's long been established in the area, and I've heard nothing but good things about Yun Chuan Garden, especially the fact that they can be one of the spicier Sichuan/Szechuan places you can dine at in the SGV.  In fact, Yun Chuan Garden was rated as the Best Szechuan Restaurant in the SGV by LA Weekly in 2009.

Yelpers give Yun Chuan Garden an average rating of 4.0 Stars out of 5.0, from over 105 reviews: http://www.yelp.com/biz/yun-chuan-garden-monterey-park

Some of the dishes we may order include:

  • Spicy with Spicy (has 3 chili peppers by this on the menu)
  • Eel Dry Pot
  • Chung King Fried Chicken Cubes in Hot Chilis
  • Cumin Lamb
  • Boiled Fish Slices in Hot Chili Sauce
  • Yunnan Style Cured Pork with Dried Bamboo
  • Spicy Fried Shrimp
  • Guiyang Spicy Chicken Noodle Soup
  • Wontons in Spicy Chili Oil

It was a great meal indeed. Very important fact is that it was not salty. The flavors are mostly spicy. Thanks Sklar!
