Don't bother to sleep in on Sunday May 5th. Instead, let's celebrate Mexican American heritage aka Cinco de Mayo with an early brunch at Juanita's Cafe in Olvera Street.

When I head to Olvera Street, I usually eat taquitos and one of my favorite places to dine is at Juanita's Cafe ( (Stall E20, corner of Cesar Chavez and Alameda). Coincidentally, L.A. icon Huell Howser visited Juanita's Cafe and surprisingly he enjoyed the taquitos too.

This little food stand has been in Olvera Street since I was a little kid back in the day. The food hasn't changed much nor have the prices. Lunch will be tasty and inexpensive. You'll most likely spend about $10 for food and a drink. Juanita's Cafe has always been a great place for good food, people watching, and as well as listening to live Mariachi music as the musicians pass by your table from the cobblestone sidewalk.

For dessert, we'll walk over to my other favorite places to dine...Mr. Churro ( This place makes the best churros in town! Like, THE best! You can order them plain with cinnamon sugar or get them with a caramel, strawberry, or chocolate filling to make this pastry a sweeter one.

Our plan is to have an early brunch at 10:00AM so we can 1.) Beat the crowds who will be flocking to Olvera Street for the festivities and 2.) Be the first in line at the restaurant when they open before the crowd hits it. Note that this is a brunch only event. You're on your own for sightseeing around Olvera Street as I will be heading to the Convention Center via Metro for The Big Photo Show. If you care to join me at The Big Photo Show, RSVP here
