Esotouric is a great little tour group that we have used in the past for several different eclectic afternoon tours. It's run by a couple, Richard and Kim, who are very knowledgeable about the history and preservation of a Los Angeles that most people aren't familiar with or have just lost sight of.
Bungalows. Crime. Hollywood. Blondes. Vets. Smog. Death.
This was Raymond Chandler’s Los Angeles, which resonated under deft and melancholy fits from his writer’s bow.
Join us as we go down the mean streets that shaped his fiction, and that in turn shaped his hard-boiled times, in a four hour tour of downtown, Hollywood and surrounding environs: The Los Angeles Athletic Club, Musso & Frank, the Hotel Van Nuys, Paramount Studio’s gates, and much, much more, including a Chandler-themed gelato stop at East Hollywood cult favorite Scoops.
Through published work, private correspondence, screenplays and film adaptations, we trace Chandler’s search for meaning and his anti-hero Philip Marlowe’s struggle to not be pigeonholed or give anything less than all he has, which lead them both down the rabbit hole of isolation, depression, and drink.
There are no paper tickets: your name will be on a list at the bus door. Check in is at 11am for a 11.30am sharp departure from the Los Angeles Athletic Club.
We encourage passengers to arrive early at the Los Angeles Athletic Club for a late breakfast in their 2nd floor dining room (Dukes). This will allow you ample time to commune in a space Raymond Chandler visited often when he was an oil company executive across the street. Check in for the tour is 11am, so we recommend getting there for breakfast no later than 10.30am. The price per person for the buffet breakfast is $15.50 (including taxes and gratuity), and the buffet includes juices, cereals, fruits, waffles, omelettes to order, etc. Our group will gather to begin the tour in the 3rd floor lounge just one flight above Dukes, so diners at the end of their meal will be well situated to be checked in. Anyone not having breakfast will simply go to the 3rd floor lounge by 11am. (We'll decide closer to the time about meeting for bkfst as a group before this comes up.)
There is a municipal parking lot just one block west at Pershing Square (http://www.yelp.com/biz/pershing-square-garage-los-angeles), which is also a Metro Station (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pershing_Square_(Los_Angeles_Metro_station).
Food and drink are permitted and suggested; no audio or video-taping without permission. We regret that there are no refunds for passengers who miss the bus.
Tickets can be ordered online until the morning of the tour. For last minute bookings, please feel free to call[masked] after 8am on tour day, and if there are seats available, you can reserve a spot and pay with cash at the bus.
