I recently did a small food crawl out in Rowland Heights with a couple of friends, and I ended up stumbling across this place that serves Uyghur Halal Cuisine from the Xinjiang Province in Northwestern China. Uyghurs are turks who settled in Central Asia from Mongolia over 1,500 years ago, with a majority the population in the Xinjiang Autonomous Province of China. Uyghurs are muslims, whose diet include mainly lamb/mutton, chicken, and camel. Beef is not a staple food for Uyghurs, and their muslim religion does not allow them to eat pork. However, unlike Omar Xinjiang Chinese Halal Restaurant in Alhambra, Silk Road Garden's owners realized the necessity to offer chicken and beef options for most of their dishes in order to cater to local tastes. The entire staff at this restaurant are Uyghurs who immigrated to the U.S., with only one of the owners who is able to speak in both Mandarin and English. The rest speak only Uyghur.
The food here is just as tasty, and pricey, as Omar's. I would venture it would be safe to say that if you like Omar, then you would enjoy eating at Silk Road Garden as well.
We will be dining "Family Style." The food bill will be split evenly amongst all attendees. Attendees will be responsible for paying for their own beverages. Please note that flexibility is an important part of family-style dining, and if you want to take a chance on attending, you have to be amenable to what the group will order. You don't have to eat everything that is ordered, but everyone pays equally, whether you eat everything or not. The goal for family-style dining is to allow for the entire group to sample as wide a variety of dishes as possible. If one or more attendees choose to order on their own, that limits the group's choices, which defeats the purpose of what Family-Style Dining is all about. If this definition of Family-Style Dining doesn't feel comfortable, this may not be the right type of event for you.
We will be ordering about 3 to 5 dishes for each group of 4, which may include the following:
Lampung Bean Starch in Special Sauce Big Plate Chicken with Hand Pulled Noodles (boneless and skinless version) Meat Pie (Lamb or Beef) Kebobs (Lamb or Chicken) Steamed Pumpkin Dumplings Uyghur Dumplings in Lamb Soup Rice Pilaf (Lamb, Beef or Chicken) Yelp Reviewers give Silk Road Garden an average rating of 3.5 Stars out of 5.0 from 15 reviews. You can read those reviews here: http://www.yelp.com/biz/silk-road-garden-rowland-heights
The anticipate cost per person will be $20 to $25, depending on how much food we order, any beverages, plus tax and gratuity. Please bring at least $40 in CASH (preferably small bills) to settle your portion of the bill. Parking is available in the strip mall where Silk Road Garden is located. We will meet in front of the restaurant at Noon. After lunch, if anyone is up for dessert, we can stop by one of the local dessert cafes such as Class 302 or Sinbala for that.
