Dog Mountain Sunset Hike

Details

Distance: 7 miles
Elevation Gain: 3,000 feet
Difficulty: 8/10

Can you think of a better way to kick off a summer weekend than watching a sunset from the top of Dog Mountain? Join me for this strenuous but rewarding evening hike to one of the most stunning viewpoints in the Columbia River Gorge. After a tough 3,000-foot climb, we’ll be treated to front-row seats as the sun sets over the forested ridges of Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Across the snaking Columbia river, we’ll catch a glimpse of Mt. Hood peeking over the shoulder of Mt. Defiance. As the light fades, we’ll linger a bit to soak in the last views of the day before descending through the forest in the dark.

Plan to arrive at the trailhead early for a prompt 6:00 pm departure. We’ll need to keep a modest but steady pace with minimal breaks to reach the summit in time for sunset. Be prepared for a continuous and relentless uphill climb. Know your limits—if you haven’t completed hikes with similar elevation gain, this event might not be the best introduction. We should arrive back at the trailhead around 10:30 or 11:00 pm.

Bring: sturdy hiking shoes or boots, plenty of water, snacks, a working headlamp, and, depending on weather, an extra layer (it can get chilly and windy at the top).

Leashed, well-behaved dogs are welcome—it is Dog Mountain! If your pup comes along, make sure to bring enough water for both of you. There are no creeks or water sources on the trail.

Carpooling is encouraged and can be coordinated in the comments. Each vehicle at the trailhead will need either to display a valid NW Forest Pass or pay the $5 day-use fee.
