Merry Monday Meetup @ Living Room Theaters! Searching for Sugarman

Grab a drink and let's go see a movie! Bring friends and some good conversation to discuss the film, its characters, the production and more. The Living Room Theater is the location of our weekly Monday meetup. Most movies they play are independent, foreign, artistic with an occasional blockbuster.

We meet Monday evenings to take advantage of their $5 Merry Monday Movie special. They have weekday showings of all their movies in the 7:00 hour, and those are the showings we're shooting for. If you see something coming up there that you'd like to recommend as our Living Room movie of the week, message me or post it on the board by Wednesday the previous week!

See you at the movies!

Searching for Sugarman

Searching for Sugar Man tells the incredible true story of Rodriguez, the greatest '70s rock icon who never was. Discovered in a Detroit bar in the late '60s by two celebrated producers struck by his soulful melodies and prophetic lyrics, they recorded an album which they believed would secure his reputation as the greatest recording artist of his generation. In fact, the album bombed and the singer disappeared into obscurity amid rumors of a gruesome on-stage suicide. But a bootleg recording found its way into apartheid South Africa and, over the next two decades, he became a phenomenon. The film follows the story of two South African fans who set out to find out what really happened to their hero. Their investigation leads them to a story more extraordinary than any of the existing myths about the artist known as Rodriguez.

"The truth-is-stranger-than-fiction saga has been a hit on the festival circuit, winning top documentary prizes at Sundance for Sweden's Bendjelloul. What sets Searching for Sugar Man apart, though, is the way in which the filmmaker preserves a sense of mystery in the telling."

"The information they eventually dislodge about Rodriguez suggests a secular saint, a deeply good man, whose music is the expression of a blessed inner being. I hope you're able to see this film. You deserve to. And yes, it exists because we need for it to."

"Intentionally or not, Searching for Sugar Man catches all that - the fleeting moments of triumph and the years of endurance, the accumulation of family and the unquenched dreams - and doesn't presume to sew it all up for us."

This was my first meet up with this group & I had a really nice time. The people were enjoyable, the format which allows for discussion afterwards, was intelligent and engaging. I was very impressed by our personable host, Josh, who ran the group discussion in a concern that every voice was heard and encouraged thoughtful remarks. I loved the film, Searching for Sugarman, having wanted to see it for some time, & was not disappointed. I look forward to making this a regular meet up event. I will hope that horror films are largely avoided as a choice however, as I never participate in watching them. I love foreign films, documentaries such as this film, and independent films the most.

Hello all. There is no 7pm showing Monday. Consider 56 Up as an alternative?

It is a great choice, my favorite documentary of 2012. Enjoy! Please continue the Monday nights, as they are better for my wife and I than Tuesdays.

i was looking forward to watching the other film as well, but a 9:45pm show time would make the discussion a little too late for most. see you next time!

I would love to see 56 Up! Netflix has the last one for streaming if you need to catch up. It's at 6:45pm this Mon. FYI.
