Debating among Ourselves - The Problem of Evil

A couple weeks back several of us started a conversation inspired by this blog post:http://www.overcomingbias.com/2009/02/write-your-hypothetical-apostasy.html

We suffer from a common problem, there aren't any good debates being brought to our doorstep. Yes, sometimes family or friends will ask us if we left because we were offended, wanted to sin, or were too prideful, but it's not like we have an abundance of good arguments (and rational discourse) brought to bear against our apostasy.

So... we're here to resolve this problem ourselves.
The idea is not to "defend the indefensible", but rather to hash out the best counter argument or counter position to our own. We're going to draw upon reasons people in our group have given for leaving Mormonism and debate the underlying issue.

We generally get around 20 people for our Thursday events, though they may not RSVP here.

This will be my first Post-Mo event. Is it okay if I stop by?

Skilled debaters know how not only to keep things civil (so logic, reasoning has a chance to prevail) but also know the value of validating part of an opposing argument while honing in on weaknesses. Skilled debaters are as adept at arguing the pro side of the issue as arguing the con side.

After reading the blog, "overcoming bias" I am not sure how our version of this works. It sounds like what the propose is to suspend our own belief system and write the best rebutal to what we believe in order to truly challenge our own beliefs. How does our version work?

Basically we're going to attempt to argue both sides (or all sides). We'll have at least one "angel's advocate" and one "devil's advocate", and the rest of us will be lending argumentative support where it is needed.

I've compiled a partial list of reasons different people in our group left the church, which will become our fodder for these conversations. Think of it as an exploratory argumentative style, not a combative one. We're trying to see where the best arguments exist, which aren't necessarily post-mormon, mormon, christian, atheist, or anything in particular.

Better use those noodles to bone up on if the Mormon version of evil and the problem of evil is rooted in xian theology or revealed theology thru a genuine, authentic, real, true prophet seer and revelator. Good success esp for the ones who get to defend Joseph. Better put your heart and soul into the preparations.
