  • MODULE 2 DISCUSSION

Communications may be the most important skill of a project manager, both conveying messages and gathering information. Words are an important communications tool but many people find visual communication easier to understand. The old adage "A picture is worth a thousand words" also applies to project management.

Graphs and charts often allows us to quickly see relationships.Florence Nightingale was not just a nurse but also a statistician. Ms. Nightingale invented polar charts (Links to an external site.) (also called coxcombs) to illustrate the causes of death of British soldiers in the Crimean War. She is said to have commented that the Queen (Victoria) might not read the report but she would look at the pictures. The charts showed clearly that disease claimed far more soldiers than enemy actions.

In this section, we will introduce visual project management and a related concept: Kanban project management. These tools are much less complex and easier for "accidental" project managers to employ than traditional, formal project management systems.
