Are you interested in getting your hands wet with CRISPR? The CRISPR/Cas9 technique has been called the most powerful gene editing tool ever. In this class you will learn the skills to do it at home. Prophase Biostudios (http://prophasebiostudios.org/) offers immersive learning experiences at the only community biotechnology lab in Austin.
Microbiologists Blake Rolland, Eric Cuellar, and molecular biologist Adrian Lara will be teaching our first CRISPR class on July 10th, with a lecture and discussion included.
Our first experiment involves transforming a special non-pathogenic strain of e.coli to become resistant to an antibiotic medium. This way, if we want to transform the bacteria to include antibiotic resistance AND special gene of interest, we will know if the transformation worked or not, by checking to see if it grows on the antibiotic plates. Read the protocol & experimental method here (https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B_R75gIJvkFURWtsT0l0M1NGbnM&usp=sharing).
If your experiment is a success, and you did indeed transform the e.coli using CRISPR, your plate should look something like this:
This CRISPR/Cas9 class is $50 to participate and free to just watch or hang out. If you are a paying participant, please come on both, the evening of the 9th and 10th for the full experience.
