Discussion: Releasing your MacGuffin

A "Macguffin" is a plot device coined by Alfred Hitchcock which is often times used in movies to drive the story. It is the object of utmost desire, something which the characters in the film are willing to sacrifice nearly everything for. It can include "money, victory, glory, survival, power, love, or even something that is entirely unexplained." {Wikipedia}

I believe this device works well because it is a reflection of our human nature. Most of us desire something that we feel would make our lives better or more complete. I also call these the "If only's." So, things like "If only I had a better job / a spouse / that promotion ... then I would be happy."

Does having a MacGuffin make us more or less happy people? What are your MacGuffin's?

    Apropos of our discussion, here's an interesting article about happiness:

    Guess my MacGuffin while I was working was "if only I was retired!" And I don't honk I'll give it up.
