Oh for Heaven's sake!! Pugs are not problem free, but they are absolutely wonderful pets. Mine is curled up in my lap as I write this. It sounds like the pug your sister-in-law encountered was not trained (people's fault) or had a serious health problem that should have been addressed. Pugs, like all dogs, should be trained as puppies, but if you adopt an older dog (as my son and his wife did) they can still be trained. Just consult the books or your vet. My pug is a girl and she is spayed, so I can't tell you about "humping." I think lots of breeds do that unless trained out of it and/or neutered. You should know that pugs are notorious eaters and should be kept on a strict diet. Except for a few carrot bites, a stray peanut here and there, our dog gets her third of a cup of kibbles twice a day and that's it! We watch her weight closely and the vet always complements her on her figure! With any dog, you are increasing the chances of arthritis problems as they age if you let their weight get too high. Pugs shed a lot! That is our biggest complaint. We vaccuum often and keep lint rollers handy. She gets a shampoo from me if the weather is warm or goes to the groomer once a month at the most to have her nails and sacs done. They snore softly and it is a soothing sound. If they snore or breathe loudly it can indicate obstructions. Pugs can have medical bills as can all dogs. Ours has had knee surgery and adenoid surgery to help breathing. Our dog gives us great love, travels with us a good deal, or stays home with caretakers who have all fallen in love with her. She attracts attention wherever we take her. People come running to pet her, and she loves children.  She goes on not-very-long walks with us but doesn't need really long walks or runs. Her poops are small and hard (because of her diet) and very easy to pick up and dispose of with consideration for others. What more could you ask?
