Python in the Cloud - PyHou - December Meetup

Hello Pythoneers!

This month's topic is:

Python in the Cloud

by Chris McCafferty

The Cloud computing landscape has changed a lot in the last few years, and Python has been along for the ride. From crunching Big Data to solving heavy compute problems, there are several ways in which Python can provide the right tools to make use of the incredibly cheap services in the Cloud.

We’ll be covering:

Hosting Big Data in the Cloud, Python’s support for Amazon Web Services & Hadoop, PiCloud (recently acquired by DropBox) and Disco.

If there’s time we’ll spin up a cluster on Amazon EC2 and have a play, plus I have a couple of real world examples that use Python to move data around. (WARNING: Perilous Live Demo)

It is impossible to cover this material without defining Big Data and some of its concepts.

Our meetup is located at the Stag's Head Pub, near Richmond and Shepherd. Please enjoy their menu and drink offerings, so they continue to enjoy hosting us! Lastly, please RSVP (even if you're a "Maybe"!) to assist us with capacity planning.

Share your Lightning Talks! A "lightning talk" is a quick mini-presentation (5 minutes maximum) on any Python topic you'd like.  We'll save time for 2-3 of these each month: to save a spot, post a comment with your talk's title/topic. Beginner topics are always welcome!

Presentations Wanted: If you'd like to share a topic with the group at an upcoming, let's talk!

Random question: has the Meetup iOS app GOTTEN RID of the abiltiy to "check in", or have i just forgotten how to use it? It COULD be me.

    Just thought I'd ask.

:) I won't clear your name just yet, but it may not be you. I've had issues with the app so I just use the mobile website. The reviews for the current version suggest that several things broke during the last update in November.

:-(Both on the app being broken AND my name not being cleared.

The presenter did a admirable job of showing by example a complex subject. I think his examples transcended the complexity by allowing all to understand the subject. The in-depth examples with practical descriptions showed how he had used the tools in his own work. His knowledge and understanding of the subject matter kept the Q&A lively.

Is it possible to do the presentation tonight online? Eg or skype?

I doubt the stags head wifi bandwidth will support that.

Stag's Head has an additional group that is meeting in our usual room, however they should be finished at 6:30 PM. We'll have a table in the restaurant reserved ahead of that for any early arrivals, and otherwise will be in the usual meeting room ("The Oak Room") at 6:30 after they clear out. We're expecting a big crowd tonight, so we'll want to unfold and arrange all the tables as best as possible! See y'all this evening!

I am sorry that holiday travel will make me miss this topic. It looks great. Hopefully someone will video tape it or take notes. I am not sure if this is the best place to ask for "Presentation Wanted" but if someone could talk about how they use VirtualEnv, that would be interesting.
