Reason for studying Japanese language and culture?

I got into Japanese through Aikido 10 years ago, and it stuck with me. I didn't try to tackle the language until I had some extra time, and now the challenge keeps me going. I also study Chinese calligraphy on the side, so that's part of it as well.

I'm Rich, and I've been studying Japanese off and on for a few years. I took 3 semesters in grad school, then audited 3 more, took a couple of years off, and started up again recently. I spent 5 weeks in Japan last fall, and now I want to go back.
