Fearless Friday 3K: Carr Mtn traverse

  • Three Ponds Trail Trailhead

    Stinson Lake Road, Ellsworth, NH (map)

    43.884827 -71.796486

  • NEW RSVP PROCESS - THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW AND DO!

    Read the entire description before you RSVP and answer the question that is part of the process. Failure to answer it with sufficient detail will result in your removal from this event.

    RSVP Process: You will be asked one question after you click "YES" for this event - "Did you read the entire event description? Will you have the items required to safely participate in this event? What hikes have you done in the last three months? Where did you go and how long did it take? Provide details." Provide enough information for me to know a little about you. If you don't take the time to answer it sufficiently I won't consider adding you to this event.

    Medical Conditions: You are responsible to let the event organizer know if you have any medical conditions or allergies that (1) could affect your ability to safely participate in this event or (2) could affect any first aid treatment that may become necessary while participating in this event. You can either provide all of this information to the event organizer beforehand or you can have a written summary of it located within an easily accessible part of your backpack.

    Emergency Contact Information: You are responsible for providing emergency contact information to the event organizer in case we need to contact them. It's also a good idea to make sure someone that you tell someone where you are going, who you are going with, and when you expect to be back. You can either provide this information to the event organizer beforehand or you can have a written summary of it located within an easily accessible part of your backpack.

    Answers DO NOT carry over from one event to another so you must answer them for EACH EVENT. Also, the question might not show up if you RSVP from a phone or tablet so if you don't see it you will need to use a computer.

    If you underestimate the demands of this event; overestimate your experience, knowledge, skills or abilities; or come unprepared you put yourself and others at risk. Consider this before you RSVP.

    === What We're Doing ===

    The plan is to hike a traverse of Mt Carr (3453') including a visit to Waternomee Falls with an additional loop of the Three Ponds Trail and Mt Kineo Trail (around Black Hill). We will spot cars at the Three Ponds Trail trailhead on Stinson Lake Road at 7:30, drive 30 minutes to the Carr Mtn Trail trailhead on the Clifford Brook Road and start our hike there.  When we get to the east end of the Carr Mtn Trail, we'll turn west on the Three Ponds Trail, and loop around Black Hill using the Donkey Hill Cutoff and Mt Kineo Trail back to our carspot.  For all the dedicated Redliners, we'll double back on the southern 0.3 miles of the Three Ponds Trail.

    If you are interested in participating in this event sign up for the waiting list. I will add people that (1) answer the question that is part of the RSVP process and (2) have done similar hikes within the past three months. RSVPs close 2 days before the event.  Guests aren't permitted. Dogs aren't permitted.

    === Trip Summary ===

    We start as a group, hike as a group, and finish as a group. Our pace will be that of the slowest hiker. This trip isn't for you if you are faster than the group and don't want to stay with us, if you want to head off on your own, or if you are slower than the group and expect us to constantly wait for you.  On this moderate pace (~2.0 MPH) trip we will hike about 11 miles and climb about 3225 feet. It should take an average hiker about 7-8 hours to complete. This event is considered Intermediate-Advanced because of the pace, distance, and elevation gain.

    Dangerous weather conditions will cancel this event - I will post an update and/or send an email to all confirmed participants.  Use this link for the current weather forecast:

    http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=43.8845&lon=-71.8431

    === What to Bring ===

    In addition to the following list, you must bring:

         Microspikes

         Winter hat and gloves

         Extra warm layers, such as fleece/down jackets

    Use this link for a list of items needed for a three season day hike:  •

    Do not rely on others to have extra items to share with you at the meeting spot or on the trail. You should know how to use all of your equipment - test and adjust it prior to this trip.

    === Directions ===

    We will meet at the Three Ponds Trail trailhead on Stinson Lake Road. It is 6.9 miles north of NH 25 and 1.8 miles north of the Stinson Lake General Store and Post Office.   While carpooling is encouraged you are responsible for coordinating your own rides. Use the comments section below to communicate with others who may also be looking to share a ride.

    I have to bow out for tomorrow. I do apologize, especially since it is so last minute but my brother has to work and he was going to watch the kids. I do hope to meet you all soon.

    Hiked the west side last Friday. The upper half of the trail is heavily eroded. The trail is basically a stream. Be sure to park at the pullout next to the Carr Mtn Trail sign. Then hike up the road (which is part of the trail) past the house and through their field on the right. Look for wooden posts with a yellow blaze on them.

      There's one post at the far end of the field. Might hard to see in fog. That's the start o the logging road up.

    I wasn't going to charm in, but I seeing Philip did - Friday to Monday made a big difference. Monday there was 6" of snow up in there! My friend's fingers & feet were frozen so we turned around. I think we were close to the summit. ): snowshoes not needed. No clue what all this current precipitation will bring. Still debating with myself on going so I may get the West side of the trail.

    I'm bowing out over my concern for the road conditions in the am/pm. My apologies. I was really looking foward to a Fearless Friday hike and I hope to try again in the future. Happy Thanksgiving!

      Hi Rob, there seems to be a glitch in the system, your answers still never showed up. Unfortunately this happens periodically with some of the events that are posted. If you're still interested in Friday's hike, feel free to sign up again and fill in the answers again.

      Thanks, Theresa. I'll wait for the next one.. Friday is looking like it won't work for me anyway. I am interested in joining you on one of your bushwhacks, though. Look forward to the next one.
