Ashford Hall December 2009

See message board for special notes about the December meetup here: http://www.meetup.com...

Ashford Hall, a skilled nursing facility is designed to provide residents with the care and assistance needed to enjoy life. Volunteering at AH is unlike any other volunteer experience you have ever had. As a group, we enrich the lives of frail or isolated seniors and/or adults, through support and friendship, during friendly visits. We also provide music and Bingo game to the residents. This is a very kid friendly event. The residents love kids and dogs. If you are planning to bring your dog, please let an organizer know or call the manager at Ashford Hall.
*** *************************************************************************************
THE MOST IMPORTANT GIFT IS YOURSELF, AND BRINGING ITEMS IS OPTIONAL. HOWEVER, IF YOU’D LIKE TO CONTRIBUTE PLEASE SEE THE FOLLOWING LIST AND STATE WHAT YOU’D LIKE TO BRING IN YOUR RSVP TO HELP WITH OUR PLANNING OF THE EVENT.

We had a smallish turnout for the last Ashford Hall event, so our supplies are low. Christmas themed prizes would be good. WE ALREADY HAVE PLENTY, SO HOLD OFF ON THESE:
Quarters for vending machine (HAVE ENOUGH FOR NEXT TIME)
White & Colored Bags (WE HAVE ENOUGH FOR NEXT TIME)
Medium & Large Towels (HAVE ENOUGH FOR NOW)
Plastic cups, paper plates and napkins
***
We could use more:
Toothbrush & Toothpaste (CAN USE. PEOPLE NORMALLY DON'T BRING ANY)
Stuffed Animals (BIGGER ONES BETTER)
Chocolate & Hard Candy (Regular & Sugar-free) This is a popular request!
Fruits (the seniors like bananas or grapes)
Board Games (CARD GAMES WOULD BE GOOD)
Plants (ARTIFICIAL ONES BETTER BECAUSE OF ALLERGIES AND DON'T HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF)
Prepaid Calling Cards (CAN USE. PEOPLE NORMALLY DON'T BRING)
***
OTHER SUGGESTIONS THAT WERE MADE:
MEN'S PERSONAL CARE ITEMS
MORE BIG PRIZES FOR BLACKOUT
PICTURES ALREADY FRAMED
BLANKETS/THROWS/DECORATIVE PILLOWS
PICTURE FRAMES (LINDSAY SAID SHE WOULD TAKE PHOTOS IF OTHERS BROUGHT FRAMES TO PUT THEM IN)
***

Other ideas:
Cookies (Regular & Sugar-Free)
Crackers (individual package)
Regular & Diet Soda Pop (chilled beforehand is best)
Sugar-Free Drinks
Baskets
White Bags or colored bags
Notes & Pens
Crossword Puzzles
CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS
Cupcakes
New or Used Family DVD Movie
Baseball/Basketball Hats
Cologne/Perfume
Hair Brush/Combs
Shampoo/Conditioner
Large/XL T-shirts
Wall decor or display

Afterward we usually go for an early dinner. It's totally optional but we hope you can join us!

***NOTE TO THOSE TAKING PHOTOS: Photography is welcome at Ashford Hall, and pictures of other volunteers, the facility, the prizes, and so on are totally acceptable. However, we need to remember to respect the privacy of the residents whom we are helping to serve. Please refrain from taking pictures of the clients, volunteers with residents, and so on. If you accidentally include someone, you can crop that person out or use programs such as photoshop or paint.net (free) to blur the face before posting to meetup, Facebook, or other sites. For a how-to on blurring faces, go to the files section or click here: http://www.meetup.com...

UPDATE: 11/29/09: SIX VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO MAKE CHRISTMAS BAGGIES ON DECEMBER 6TH (morning of event) from 11:00 AM TILL 1:00 AM. IF WE START ON TIME, WE MIGHT FINISH IT IN AN HOUR! UPDATE: 12/3/09: We only need 6 volunteers for the Christmas Baggies Prep and it will be from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM. This is a separate activity from the bingo prizes.

Had a great time mingling with some of the volunteers. The donations rolled in faster than we could get them prepared.
    Thanks for a wonderful experience!

What a great experience; very enjoyable, would definitely visit with the seniors again. The volunteers got to create and deliver holiday bags to all of the residents and then there were a ton of great Bingo prizes, where all of the residents eventually got to win :). Would highly recommend the group.

    Hi-
It was extremely satisfying to meet and hug the residents at Ashford Hall. I know you and other organizers put many hours into each event, working in partnership with each organization - building trust and delivering promises takes a lot of effort and dedication. I would like to become an organizer if there is a need for me, otherwise I'm happy to package, deliver, or serve in any capacity.

One (general) suggestion is to ask the organizer to arrive early enough to arrange the room the volunteers will work in, plan out the working arrangements and decide on how best to handle production.

For Ashford Hall, I went to the Alzheimer’s wing (Section 5) and worked with a nurse to distribute the Xmas goodies (regular, diabetic, restricted diets). The residents were very appreciative and I was told it was the first time someone visited them to hand out treats. I was moved by their smiles and hugs.

Thank you for your dedication and building such a strong organization.

Great turnout, great event! Do we need anything for January? Maybe consumables (cups, plates etc.) or edibles...other than that, not much. We had sooooo many surplus gifts! I'd estimate double or maybe triple the norm on that. I can usually fit everything into my little ute but there was just no way of doing that today. Great job everybody!

What an awesome event & so very organized - thanks to all of the RAK Organizers! Bullet just LOVED all the attention he got from the Ashford Hall residents and I could tell that they liked him, too. We will definitely be going to Ashford Hall again.

It was such a blessings to see the joy on the residents faces when they received their Christmas gifts/treats and the fun they had playing bingo! Some even told me it reminded them of their younger days! I was deeply touched by all the love they gave us!

It was great to see so many willing volunteers. I, like many, were new to Ashford Hall and now can see why so many people return. I'll be back:)

Last minute shoppers' tip:(I just saw these items today)- go to Dollar Tree and check out the round/tubes of hard old fashioned christmas candy- (looks like this sort of: http://www.candysnob.com/archives/pictures/2008-12-15_0814.png)... Lots of other good stuff and all for $1 (about 1 lb). Here's the store locator:

Wish someone would dress up as Santa. I'm planning on renting an elf costume....guess you could say I'm really in the spirit haha

  • Robin

OK, so you don't want people there at noon anymore, like the original note said?

    December 2, 2009

  • Sonja R

oh yes about 10 different photo frames and candles...boxes of stuff here

    November 28, 2009

  • Sonja R

Jo, I'm debating here...should I go ahead and make up xmas gift bags from all the stuff I've bought or just bring everything that day? Are we going to have enough time to get all of this together for everyone? I'm bringing cupcakes (4 doz or so) plus Xmas cookies. I have crossword puzzles, blankets, makeup for the women, lotions, you name I've collected it now for almost 3 mos straight. By the way lady it was good to see you at the Marg Ball!
