Volunteering at Love For Kids "Palette to Palate" Fund-Raising Event

  • This location is shown only to members

The good folks at the Love For Kids, Inc., charity who host the big annual Christmas Party for thousands of underprivileged kids, and other heartwarming events, at which so many RAK volunteers have helped out in past years now need our help at their biggest fund-raising event of the year, the "Palette to Palate" gala! It will be held on Saturday, August 10, at the wonderful Frontiers of Flight Museum, at Dallas Love Field, and as the name suggests, this amazing evening will feature artists and their art, chefs and their cuisines, and many fine wines, as well as a great live band.

The event's MC will be Tim Vasquez, who has worked in the fields of radio and television for more than 20 years. He will oversee a memorable evening of both fine art and culinary art that will tantalize all the senses of this gala’s many guests and sponsors (and ours too!) with wonderful colors, flavors, aromas, and sounds!

To learn more about this event, please go to http://PaletteToPalate.org. If you’re not familiar with the hosting charity, Love For Kids, Inc. (LFK), and would like to know who they are and what they do, go to http://PaletteToPalate.org/home/Love-For-Kids-Inc-history, and while you’re there, please make a point of watching the two brief videos you’ll find there.

Once you’ve done that, I’m confident that you’ll want to help LFK make this fund-raiser a roaring success, which you can do by volunteering your time, effort, and talents that afternoon and/or evening. Because a large attendance is expected, they’ll need the help of many caring and dedicated volunteers who have a variety of interests and skill sets. Please go to http://PalettetToPalate.org/volunteer to find out what will be expected of volunteers and what specific duties and shifts are available, and then sign up there for your preferred slot. The “Quantity” column lets you know how many openings (if any) are still available for each duty and shift. I urge you to claim your preference right away, because all openings will eventually be filled, and the more desirable ones will fill up very soon.

The gala will start officially at 7:30 p.m., but LFK will need our help at two different times. The first will be in the afternoon, at which time they'll need about 60 volunteers to help with setting up, decorating, moving things into place, and perhaps doing some heavy lifting. The second will be just before and then during the gala. The specific times and duties for all of these shifts, both afternoon and evening, are listed on the Volunteer page for the event, but please know that all volunteers are asked to arrive 30 minutes before the start of their shifts.

Tickets to "Palette to Palate" sell for $60. As a "thank you" to the able-bodied volunteers who'll be helping out in the afternoon, LFK will offer them tickets for half of that price, or $30, which will let them take part in the entire evening festivities. Volunteers for the evening shifts who are there for their entire assigned times will be welcome to stay for the rest of the party after their respective shifts end.

All volunteers must be at least 21 years old, and all are asked and expected not to have any alcoholic beverages while they're on duty. Style of dress is casual for the afternoon set-up shifts, of course, and is cocktail attire for the evening shifts at the event itself, except that wine pourers and bartenders are asked to dress in black shirts and slacks.

Once you have signed up to volunteer, you will be e-mailed an admission ticket which you must have in order to be able to volunteer. Please bring that ticket with you to the Frontiers of Flight Museum that day, along with your filled-out waiver form. There’s a link to that form on the Volunteer page.

And after you’ve signed up on that page, please also RSVP “Yes” on this RAK event page, so that we’ll have an idea of how many RAK volunteers will be there. But please remember that if you want to volunteer at the “Palette to Palate” gala, it is not enough just to have RSVP’d “Yes” on this page! You must ALSO go to http://PaletteToPalate.org/volunteer and provide the information requested there, which will get you the ticket you’ll need to get in!

Thank you from everyone at Love For Kids, and from all the many children (and some "older kids") who will benefit from the money raised at this important event, for considering helping out at this year’s “Palette to Palate”!

Blessings,

Tony

The love for kids event was absolutely great! There was a bit of a confusion when I first got there, they could not figure out where to put me, but it go worked out and I spent an evening serving some amazing people... A really great experience for me as a newcomer to Dallas. Thank you.

Very happy to be doing this & registered for 8:30-10:30pm. However, it didn't request payment. Where do I do I need to pay?

    August 6, 2013

    • Tony M.

Hi, Shaleisa, and thank you for volunteering! Afternoon volunteers will buy their half-price tickets at the end of their afternoon shifts. Evening volunteers will not have to pay, because they'll be working during the party, and therefore cannot take part as full-benefit guests. (For example, as noted in the announcement above, no alcohloic beverages while on duty.) I hope that helps!

Hey, RAK volunteers for this wonderful event, which is now just a week away! If you've already signed up at the Love For Kids web site and claimed an assignment and shift of your choosing, thank you!!! If you have NOT already done that, please, please remember that you must FIRST reserve your volunteer slot at http://PaletteToPalate.org/volunteer before RSVPing on this RAK event page! This is VERY IMPORTANT! If you do not register at that LFK volunteer sign-up page, as was stated in the original posting for this meetup, you will NOT be getting into the "P. to P." party next Saturday evening!
I'm looking forward to seeing a lot of RAK volunteers there, and to having a group photo taken of us, "all gussied up," toward the end of the evening!
    Blessings and thanks,
    Tony

I tried to access the link below to join this group but the server didn't connect. Is it still a good link?

    • Tony M.

Hi, Nola. If by "the link below" you mean http://PaletteToPalat..., then yes, it's still a good and valid link! If you haven't already signed up there, I hope there are still open slots you can choose from, in which case I'll look forward to seeing you next Saturday!

Hi! My boyfriend and I just signed up to help out during the evening part of the event and are very excited as this is our first volunteer event with RAK. Could some of the men please shed some light on what they're going to wear for this "cocktail attire" event? Thanks!

    1 · July 27, 2013

    • Tony M.

Hi, Katelyn, and welcome to Random Acts of Kindness! At the "P. to P." gala, all guys will be wearing a suit and tie (though not a tuxedo), or at least a blazer or sports jacket and "nice" or dressy slacks and a tie. If last year is any indication, a lot of the women will use this event as an excuse to wear and show off their "little black dress." :-)

  • Chedel T.

Thanks, Tony, sounds great! Just to be clear, those of us volunteering for the evening shift still need to buy a ticket, or only if we volunteer in the afternoon but want to stay until the end of the event?

    1 · July 23, 2013

    • Tony M.

Hi, Chedel, and thanks for asking. No, volunteers for either of the evening shifts (that is, during the gala) do NOT need to buy a ticket. That makes sense, because evening volunteers will be busy working, so they can't really be partying while they're on duty (although dinner will be provided), and they can't drink alcohol during their shifts anyway. Afternoon volunteers have the disadvantage of being charged $30 to go to the party that evening, but the advantage of participating fully, as paid guests!

We'd love to have you both there with us, Lyric. Just remember that you EACH need to sign up on the LFK Palette to Palate Volunteer page, and your preferred shift needs to have at least two openings if you want to volunteer together.
