What we’re about
Parents are the first and foremost teachers in a child's life alongside grandparents and the extended family. This is a group for parents or anyone interested in sharing their experience of creative reading, writing, spelling, and oral language strategies for children from the time children become aware of the sound symbol relationship and the meaning and power of words. There must be hundreds of reading activities that have been or can be developed into games, play, music, dance, movement, drama, art, etc. That's a lot of potential for creating fun, learning experiences. Come share an experience or strategy and pick up a few more strategies in return.
It's been said that children learn to read through Grade 3 and then read to learn thereafter. You may agree or disagree. However, let's explore ideas to develop an exceptional love of reading in children and infuse the process with dozens of creative and physical activities. Venues for discussions can vary depending on the needs of the group and get-togethers with parents and children can include playgrounds, parks, libraries or special event places.
