Reading to Kids Monthly Reading Club
You must RSVP at http://www.readingtokids.org Reading to Kids is a grassroots organization dedicated to inspiring underserved children with a love of reading, thereby enriching their lives and opportunities for success in the future. To this end, Reading to Kids gathers on average 825 children and 349 volunteers at reading clubs on the second Saturday of every month at eight Los Angeles elementary schools. At the monthly reading clubs, pairs of volunteers read aloud to small groups of children, while their parents receive training on how to encourage their children to read at home. Kids, parents, teachers, and school libraries receive book donations at the end of the reading clubs. These are important donations, as 60 percent of low-income homes do not have age-appropriate reading materials for children. Since its inception in 1999, Reading to Kids has given more than 144,800 prize books to children who attend the reading clubs, donated more than 26,000 hardcover books to school libraries, and our volunteers have spent over 171,000 hours reading to kids. Click here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reading_to_Kids) to see our entry on Wikipedia. There is no long-term commitment. Once you register, you can decide how often to volunteer. Whether it's every month, or once a year, we always appreciate your time! *Please indicate at which school you are volunteering in your RSVP! You must RSVP at http://www.readingtokids.org

What we're about

Public Group

This outstanding group of volunteers is a grassroots organization dedicated to inspiring underserved children with a love of reading, thereby enriching their lives and opportunities for success in the future. To this end, Reading to Kids gathers hundreds of children and volunteers for reading clubs on the second Saturday of every month. The monthly reading clubs do not require an ongoing commitment - volunteers can choose to participate at a reading club whenever their schedules permit.

The reading groups meet at any one of the seven schools on our website, so be sure to visit the website at http://www.readingtokids.org for exact directions and to RSVP for the next reading club - THIS IS ESSENTIAL!

If and when you arrive, and you'll likely meet people from all walks of life in and around Los Angeles. After the reading is concluded, we invite all the volunteers to meet at El Cholo restaurant on Western Avenue for a social hour with free appetizers.

It is a great opportunity for individuals to join a casual volunteer effort, as well as corporate and student groups to build cohesion and be a grassroots member of truly hands-on community service project. I can't say enough great things about it!
