Before you Blogdown

Hello blog fans!

Blogdown is an awesome and quick way to get started with a blog. It's so fast, in fact, that you will have your very own blog up and running by the end of our session on Saturday! To help meet that goal, it would be helpful if you make a couple of the more time-consuming decisions in advance.

1. Your content & audience - What will you write about? Is this a personal blog? A business site? Think of a few topics for posts and consider bringing some text, or at least some titles, with you so you'll have some content to get started with. If nothing comes to mind, no worries - we'll generate some bacon ipsum (or veggie ipsum, if you prefer) to get us started.

2. Your theme - A theme customizes the look and style of your blog. You can use any of the 200+ Hugo themes you like, but the 4 below are easiest to get started with. Take a look at the demos below, and pick a theme that best fits your style. It is easy to agonize for hours over this, so do this sooner rather than later!

3. Github - Create a GitHub account (if you don't have one already) and know your username/password.

4. Software - as always, you'll need a recent-ish version R and RStudio on your computer. Come early and we'll help you get it installed!

Optional: A domain name. If you want to host your website at your very own special address such as http://myawesomeblog.... (rather than the default http://myawesomeblog...., then purchase a domain name from a registrar such as Netlify, GoDaddy, HostGator, or similar before you come. Do NOT purchase a "hosting" plan.

The cost for a domain name is usually < $20/year, although I strongly suggest you purchase the "domain privacy" option for an additional $20 or so. This will keep your personal details (name, address, etc.) away from your website and help prevent harassment should idiotic internet trolls ever head your way.

Be sure to bring your registrar username/password to class so you get it all set up.
