1 when I was a kid, with my fathers help. About 2'x3'x3' metal tube frame with a Cosmac Elf RCA 1802 uC (256 bytes, not kbytes, of RAM). Powered by a car battery with a center tap for + and - 6 volt power. Relays for fwd and reverse and big darlingtons for speed. Steering on the single powered wheel mounted center front, and two followers in the back left and right corner. Quite and education. I've also built many lego and simple robots with my kids. Nothing so fancy as what my dad did. Now I'm working on a different sort of robot: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:161157
Half way between. Directed remotely, but with some local autonomy.
If a standard part is available, and cheap, that's always best. But if I need something special, 3D printing is the way to go.
Not really. Fun to watch.
I'm a jack of all trades, master of very little. I'm good with firmware, digital electronics, and simple analog electronics and hardware. OpenSCAD. MSP430. CCS. PIC. C/Asm. Stepper Motor Control/Drivers. Protel 99.
