Hi, Doug.  You might want to link to our website

A couple more interesting connections, if people are willing to travel to San Mateo, near the San Francisco airport:

RoboGames – robotics competition

MakerFaire – Do It Yourself expo

And definitely visit MakerPlace in San Diego at

Patrick Henry High School Engineering academy is having a silent auction and is inviting kids from several feeder middle schools, Pershing and Lewis amongst them.

I wanted to make a flyer with links to San Diego classes,  web links, tv shows, etc that are of interest to 6th-12th graders thinking about engineering,  emphasis on summer classes.

If you have a minute,  can you scan through my list below and see if I am missing any of your “top five” links?

I don’t know what the agenda for the “talking portion” of the night is,  but while everyone is there it would be a good idea to touch on all the things out there these days that parents can do with their kids:

San Diego:

UCSD Summer Extension classes

DIY Drones (quadcopter company HQ in San Diego)

Multiplex (German remote control plane company w/ US presense in San Diego)

San Diego Robotics Club

Make website

Arduino (microcontroller programming)

Websites on Robotics

Websites on making go-karts, electric bikes

Websites to teach electronics, physics,  Kahn Academy, etc.

Websites with animations on how things work (like airsoft guns,  motors, etc).

McMaster Carr website

How It’s Made

Products to buy:

Lego Robotics

3D Printers

Free Software

Google Sketchup

Making things move

Cooking/baking is great engineering/math training..

Scouts (I think they do a fair amount of crafts)

Art classes (lots of inventors are artists)

Trip to hobby stores/ /Marshall’s Hardware/ Ridout Plasstics/ Industrial Metal Supply

Awesome Doug, thanks for moving this forward! What was the name of that other organization you and your son are involved in?  I want to maybe check it out for my son Jordan.

Thank You!

Glad to help get the word out.  I'll announce to my classes then post the flyer on my Edmodo page for all my students to access.  I'll also forward to the secretary who produces our weekly bulletin.  You have a couple of nice kids.  Good to have in class.

Hello Mr. Royal,

I'm Doug Dromgoole,  my son Bradley is in your engineering class and my son Matthew is an "alum."
I am assisting the PHHS (Patrick Henry High School) Engineer Academy Advisory Board in getting the word out about an event.
They are hosting their 3rd annual spaghetti dinner on JAN 29th and are inviting the Lewis families.  This is an opportunity for Lewis students and families to learn about the PHHS Engineer Academy.  In addition, we will have PHHS students with projects at the event and  PHHS faculty and parents.  Could you please forward this flyer to the Lewis  families who are interested in Engineering?
If you need hard copies I can make arrangements to bring them over.  If you need some "props" like a 3D-print job or a robotic tank (to whet their appetites for attending)  I can likely supply them.  Prizes aside,  there are some very cool educational opportunities in San Diego right now that I've become aware of while scouting around for things for my kids to do (UCSD summer extension classes,  San Diego robotics club, Makerplace, etc.).  I think socializing is a key way to become apprised of what is available in San Diego.

Thank you for your support, please call [masked] with any questions.
