Annual Red Rocks trip. Christmas/New Years

  • to

  • This location is shown only to members

  • Time to start planning this years Red Rocks trip.

Note:  this is a no-host event.  This means that you need to organize your own transportation, camping gear, food, climbing gear and campsites (any of us going up early can try to get extra sites if necessary or if there are enough of us we can reserve a group campsite).

We usually head up Christmas day in the evening or early the morning after Christmas and climb through New Years.

Who wants to go this year?

We will be staying at the campgrounds again. Come for any or all.  If there are enough people going we can try to get a group campsite instead.

Red Rocks is one of the best climbing locations in the US.  Whether you prefer to clip bolts in Calico Basin or you want to get on the many multi-pitch trad climbs in the many deep canyons this is a great winter crag to climb when the weather is too cold or wet in CA.

Note:  this is predominantly a multipitch trad climbing locale, but there are many bolted routes as well.  Everyone is welcome as long as there are adequate numbers of experienced climbers willing to take less experienced climbers.

Please share your climbing experience/knowledge, what kind of climbing you plan to do or want to do and whether you can accommodate less experienced climbers.

Let us know when you can leave, if you can drive and how many passengers you can take with you or if you need a ride, if you lead or follow, if you have a rack, etc

    Minimum personal gear:

    Tent

    Insulated sleeping pad

Warm mummy sleeping bag (20deg minimum)

Warm clothes for around campsite, down jacket highly recommended

    Cooking gear and stove/gas

    Food

Water jugs (they have water at campgrounds too)

    Harness

    Belay device

    Helmet

    Climbing shoes

    Approach shoes

    Climbing pack

    Group gear:

    Anchor gear

    Ropes

    Etc

Additional gear is needed for those doing multipitch trad

Hey all, just want to check in about this event! Where do we meet the day of?

Some friends and I will be in Red Rocks / Las Vegas from December 24 through at least December 31, possibly January 1. We'll be trad climbing (mostly on the weekends, since I have to work during the week), but we won't be camping.

Only can go for New Year's--need to also find a leader.

Don't think I'm ready for this. Thanks for the idea, though. It's something to work toward. :)

Looking forward to climbing! I'll be there from 22-23 for bouldering but need a sport climbing partner for[masked]

@srini I have not! Have you been, would you like to lead this for sport?

@Krystle, I haven't but I've heard good things. And yeah, I'd be up for leading it, as long as it's in the 10s.

I guess my description was a little confusing. We can coordinate carpools, when we are leaving, campsites, etc together, but I just wanted to mske it clear that i dont go to RR for toproping or bolt clipping. This place has some of the best multipitch trad routes in the US and that's what I plan on doing. Just need to find me a badass climbing partner who can handle the long approaches and descents and has some wicked belay skills.

Hopefully we get some more trad leaders to join us and some of you can learn to follow by then. Or maybe even lead.

Maybe if I can find a climbing partner.
